Reasonable post draft wishlist:

As of right now our roster looks like:
PG: Crawford, Teague
SG: Joe, Mo
SF: ~Marv, Mo
PF: Josh
C: Al, Morris

I think we have too much invested in our back court to resign Flip or Bibby but I do believe a solid defender on the cheap would be a good pick up (Royal Ivey)

Front court needs a lot of work but I think we should start with resigning Marvin and Zaza
There aren't that many backups that are as good as Zaza in this league and I think we take him for granted a lot.

I know that there are a lot of different players that we would love to go get, but we just don't have that much money to spend so free agents (within reason) that I think we should look at would be Othello, Rio, Shelden(banger that will be cheap), Wilcox(even he may be too expensive), Skinner(rebounder), possibly Kwame...

I know that these guys are only 5-10 minute guys, but again I really don't think our FO will pay luxury tax this year, so these guys could help us some

I think we still could resign flip maybe not Bibby. But I would love to bring in Royal Ivey. But the F/A a would want us to get would be our own ZaZa and Flip, as well as Bibby at the right price 7 millions a year. I know that is asking a lot from Bibby but I think he likes it here..... just not sure he likes it that much. But if he want take that let him walk.

But F/A outside our own I would like would be

Channing Frye, Leon Powe, Theo Ratliff, Johan Petro, Kwame Brown , Hakim Warrick, Drew Gooden(but I think he may be too much money), Shelden Williams (don't really want this guy but he is better than Solo), Antonio Anderson( undrafted F/A out of Memphis strickly for defense in the treva ariza mole).

I am leaning more towards Frye, Petro or Kwame Brown, Royal Ivey, and Anotnio Anderson.

IDK, but its not a problem we havent previously faced. IMO anybody quick enough on one end of the court "crawford" has the ability to move just as fast laterally on the opposite end.

Shelden Williams? NO!!!!!!!!!! Better off with signing Jeff Adrien as an undrafted free agent and playing him. Shelden's hands make him worthless at this level. I used to think he could become Reggie Evans, but I don't believe he can anymore. Josh McRoberts has more value as free agent PF.

Don't like Ivey either. How bad were the Hawks when these guys were here? No desire to relive the bad old days.

I'd have to think about this further as I expect Mario West and Othello Hunter back playing bigger roles. If Mario can add some offense, he's our ready made defensive stopper and Othello Hunter should be ready to step up to a bigger role as backup PF. The open spots are starting PG, backup big (likely 2) and then groom for future guys who are likely undrafted free agents for the end of the roster. I think Zaza is resigned as one of the bigs.

I want to pursue Ramon Sessions with the full MLE, but it is risky. If Milwaukee is likely to match our best offer then I'd have to abandon the idea because it would make fallback negotiations with Bibby much more difficult. The other full MLE pursuit would be Marcin Gortat, but I doubt we could land him because he should have other offers at that level and Orlando may match.

I like:
Johan Petro at the minimum because of his length.
Aaron Gray at the minimum to bang.

No problem with Chris Wilcox, but I think he'll be too expensive and not sure of him playing backup C effectively.

The more I think about it, the less clue I have about what will happen.

Kwame Brown isn't a free agent. He has a 4M player option with Detroit.

According to hoopshype.com our payroll is roughly 42.7 million. Reports indicate, given the poor economy, the salary cap could be around 57 million, source:

So that gives us roughly $15 million dollars to play with if we let our free agents walk. Personally, I'd wave goodbye to Bibby and Murray. I'd also wave goodbye to Pachulia since he'll be looking for a pay raise from his $4 mill salary and I think we can sign comparable replacements for less money.

With Wiliams, I'd offer him a one-year deal and see what happens in 2010. I don't see him getting a big contract offer from a team this summer.

The free agents I'd sign are...

Glen "Big Baby" Davis - 3 years/12 million
why?
Big Baby really came into his own during the playoffs and can clearly contribute to any team's frontcourt. I think he'd be a great addition to the Hawks 2nd unit. I also do this in part to weaken the Celtics.

Theo Ratliff - 1 year/league minimum
why?
I think bringing Ratliff back would be a good decision. He can still block shots and would add some veteran experience to the frontcourt.

Steve Novack - 1 year/league minimum
why?
He could be a good zone buster off the bench.


I'd then pull off this trade...

Hawks get:

Hilton Armstrong

Hornets get:
Randolph Morris
Trade Exception

WHY?
Hawks get a quality backup combo guard and a solid young C in Armstrong. The Hornets do this to save money.

Anderson is long good build at 6'7' about 220 lbs, and has 3 point range. Sounds just like Marvin, well he is about 2 in. shorter and about 20 lbs lighter. But he can handle the ball better and his shot is just as good as Marvins. He could gard SF. and he would be a hell of alot cheapre. Now I would rather have Marvin, I am just saying if we don't keep Marvin.


But Frye has been playing a little soft as of late, but when he was in NY he wasn't playing soft at all. I say some glimpses of his old self last year when he got big minutes.

My top free agent is Gortat. the Hawks suck on the defensive glass and are undersized inside. Gortat would make a big difference there plus he is used to guarding Howard.

pja123, your plan, build on using cap space and ending just two or three minimum contracts over the salary cap is exactly what I am afraid of, since it would certainly come more from the owners and not Sund, except if he wants absolutely to keep room under the tax for next summer, and he's already OK to give Joe the max.

This last option is something I don't like, as I don't like the other option of using cap space, since we would also let walk Childress (even if he could never came back here).

I find hard that letting walk Bibby, Zaza, Childress and Murray, will only bring a guy named Jamal Crawford as best new player.
If it was to get Daniels (I thought in the past he could be a good fit here), I would have traded Speedy for him, and re-signed Bibby, instead of getting Crawford. At least, we would not have to renounce to all these guys, only Murray and maybe Zaza (or we re-sign him), and use the MLE on a F.A. (Glen Davis part), and the BAE on other one (for example, to get Petro, offering part of BAE, just a little bit higher than a minimum contract, could be what would make Petro choose ATL instead of a minimum contract with another team).
We keep the core, so don't gamble on the fact that Crawford as starting PG will work or not, add some players, and keep Childress rights for a future sign and trade.

I can't stop thinking all would have been easier if we have traded Zaza and Speedy for Brad Miller, or even Marvin+Zaza+Speedy for Miller+Salmons (SAC fans seemed to be OK with that in February).
We would have our big guy backing both Horford and Smith (in order to not hurt with a bench guy at 11M, I would have start him and use Horford as energizer coming from the bench), and Marvin replaced by Salmons.
No Marvin and Zaza F.A. question this summer, only Bibby to re-sign or sign and trade, and possibility to keep Miller in 2010 for way less than what is making, giving room under the tax to increase Joe if needed, or use the MLE on a new player.

We have to add Teague, so $1,144,900. Make it at nearly $44M, and one more minimum cap hold since we traded two for one in the Crawford trade, so 5 minimum cap holds, total being over 46M.

You're projecting Anderson based on his college performance. That wasn't enough to get him drafted and the scouts weren't very enamored with his shooting. If we signed him, he wouldn't be playing minutes for us this year. He'd be practicing or sent to the D league. I'm not totally writing him off, just saying that he has a long way to go before he contributes in the NBA and I'm not worried about losing him so much that I'd like to pay for his apprenticeship. I just as well let him spend a year in the D league on his own and if he looks good sign him next summer. There are other undrafted free agent bigs that I'd rather bring in because if one of them succeeds we'd likely have to overpay to get their services down the line.

I agree that Frye looked good year 1 in New York. Something happened because he's had 3 years since where he's looked softer and softer and his numbers show it. Maybe it was his role in Portland, but I've not seen anything that makes me think we'd get the NY Channing Frye.

He got injuried about two or three years ago. It wasn't too serious, but I believe it was hard for him to recover mentally. Him seem to be playing more like his old self last year when he got some good minutes.

true but if the Hawks promised him the same amount of money for more years, say about three he could exircise his option and then he would become a Free Agent. Correct?

I don't think the Hawks could make an offer like that to him until he was an FA. Its called tampering.

^^^ Correct. That is tampering. Look what happened to Minnesota when they were caught doing silly tampering (not the same situation, but shows what can happen). Also do you think that he's worth 4M a year? If we had a 3M expiring contract they could trade Kwame for I think they might to get an extra 1M to use in free agency.

I wanted Kwame Brown last summer, but not at the $4M price tag. Once I saw him play in Detroit, I was so glad we didn't go that route. Sure we got nothing out of Randolph Morris on the floor (was he signed just to hang out with Josh?), but Kwame would have meant no Maurice Evans and he was valuable.
