Any scenarios here? Chills to CLE?

Post#1 » by td00 » Mon Jul 6, 2009 1:48 pm

Found on hoopshype.com:

It is also possible the Cavs were meeting with restricted free-agent wing Josh Childress, who lives in the Los Angeles area in the off-season. The 6-8 veteran who is known for being an intelligent player and good defender played last season in Greece after rejecting an offer from the Atlanta Hawks. He's averaged 11.1 points and 5.9 rebounds for his career.

The Hawks still have matching rights on Childress, but they have several of their own free agents they are in talks to retain and may not be willing to match an offer sheet. Childress still has two years left on his contract in Greece but has an opt-out clause and is considering returning to the NBA, having met with the Milwaukee Bucks last week.

So it does sound like Chills will be a factor this year when we determine our roster.

Could we possibly get JJ Hickson since Shaq has been added? I would take a shot with him as he showed a post presence last year and he is on that 1st round contract as a 19th pick.

I think someone is going to gamble that the Hawks are bluffing. And I think there's a decent chance they'll be right...

Atlanta cannot afford Zaza, Bibby, Marvin, Andersen AND Childress.

I don't think the Hawks would match a MLE offer for Childress at this point. I don't care what the team is telling Sekou Smith. Its free to SAY that they are going to match a contract to Childress. They have every reason to tell anyone that would listen that they would match an offer- its free to say that. When it comes down to it I don't think the Hawks would want to have 16 million dollars locked up in the SF position for next season.

If I'm the Hawks, I'm working the phones to sell LAC on a S&T for that TPE and something like Mardy Collins and a 2nd rounder.

That's right on the ATL part, they can say they will match, it doesn't cost them anything.

But on Childress side, it's possible he'd want a little bit more than the MLE, and if a team agrees with that but had only the MLE, they could be OK with a sign-&-trade, especially if Childress really wants more than the MLE.

Instead of just no match or get a TPE, ATL has to see if they can get a big in return, even if that means that they won't spend the MLE on a player as it would add some salaries.

The BYC makes it hard to find a trade, but I hope they can find one, or at least wait another year to do that.
I am pretty sure that if Childress can only get the MLE, even for a long contract, he will stay in Greece at least one more year, and retry later. His current contract is too much bigger than the MLE to sign for that kind of money.

The problem becomes finding a better big man than Zaza. Teams will be reticent to give up that kind of a player for just Childress.

I have a question about Josh Childress: I know he's long and fairly athletic....but how are his defensive abilities?

Great?
Average?

Any info would be greatly apreciated.

If can get a better big than what you have, and keep Zaza, our frontcourt will be better than last year, and this kind of move doesn't mean we are over the tax. Just depend on the money for Bibby, Marvin and Zaza, and the official numbers to come Wednesday.

If we can't get the perfect player for the 30minutes left by Horford and Smith, keeping Zaza and adding a better big than the others is still a good thing.

The Hawks will need to take back at least $4M in a S&T.

Add in what will at the very least be $18M for Zaza, Bibby, and Marvin, and you are already at $66M. Any extra money paid to those three will definitely push the Hawks closer to the luxury tax line. Plus, you still have to fill out the rest of the roster..

It's really a tight fit.

To me, it comes down to this - if you're definitely re-signing Zaza, the big man you get in a trade needs to be better than David Andersen.

Chills ain't going to Cleveland, he's coming to Milwaukee.

Cleveland wants Odom or Marion.

I've no problem with letting Childress walk to Milwaukee although I'm still in favor of Childress going to the Clippers for a TPE and that's it. I think the smart money is that he'll actually return to Greece, but we'll see.

I think the Cleveland rumor stems from looking to see what free agents live in LA to correspond with Ferry's trip and that's it.

With you there, but I'm starting to get obsessed with this:

Los Angeles Clippers receive Minnesota's first round pick (top-10 protected through 2011, unprotected 2012)

No one is going to give up a first rounder for Childress when the hawks could easily decline to match a MLE offersheet.

I'm dreaming too...

Honestly, I'd be happy with Mardy Collins and a 2nd rounder.

FYI- Chills has until July 15 (almost a week from today) to make a decision to opt out of his contract in Greece.

Bucks are the most likely candidate to get Chills at this moment. The Cavs would offer a low ball offer and the Hawks would match.

Just a question, is this your best guess or do you have inside information on this regarding the Bucks?

He is a stronger defender with a bright basketball IQ. In my opinion he is more of a defense threat than an offensive threat, even though he can shoot.
