Cheap Centers

Post#1 » by Rod700 » Tue Jul 7, 2009 7:03 pm

I know we don't all adhere to this line of thinking, but I value Zaza's rebounding, limited inside scoring, timely drawn fouls that prevent momentum shifts, and just general bulk behind a short center and an athletic but not overly strong power forward. Having said that, Bibby's recent contract agreement gives us hope of resigning both Marv and Zaza. I'd like to keep Zaza as a serviceable back-up, and bring in a cheap seven footer specialist to guard opposing bigs when they are too much for Al. Someone really to be Zaza's counterpart as defense is by no means his strong point. Here is a quick list I threw together of possible FA that might fit the bill. Feel free to add or take away.

Fracisco Elson: A little light and old, but a temporary fix that is 7 feet tall, a good defender, and can run with the team.
Adonal Foyle: Also a little old, doesn't have the height we want, clearly a specialist, but could help fill the need we have.
Aaron Gray???: Really don't know enough about the guy to say his game fits the bill.
Steven Hunter: Past injuries are a concern.
Jamal Maglore: Wasn't that impressed with him in the playoffs.
Mikki Moore: Too skinny IMO
Johan Petro: Could be the perfect fit or a complete bust.

Given what's available, and the limited role the player would perform, I'd probably be most comfortable pursuing Elson and/or Petro, unless Gray has defensive capabilities I'm not aware of.

The fact that Solomon Jones got a QO from the team kind of indicates that they weren't particularly taken with the options out there. I'm not saying that I agree with that because I've gotten tired of seeing so little from Solomon, but someone wanted to make sure we can sign him back.

Crap, didn't realize we had extend a QO to Solo. He has some shot blocking skill, but it's nullied by all the fouls. He seems like a guy that could benefit from playing overseas for a year. Still though, his QO has to be pretty low considering he made around $800,000 last year if I recall correctly. Maybe we could still go after one of these guys if our resignings go well.

What about the MLE? Do we have to use it on our unrestricted free agents like Zaza if we resign him above the cap?

I'm holding out hope that we end up pulling Solomon's QO off the table. I'm sick of seeing him go for the big block and fouling every time someone drives the lane. The guys basketball IQ is as bad as it gets.

No, the MLE would only apply to Flip because we don't have his bird rights and David Andersen if we exceed minimum (which we'd have to) and of course to free agents of other teams. We have Zaza's bird rights which means we can exceed the cap to resign him. My point of Solomon was that they were concerned enough about losing him or thought he was worthwhile enough to extend him the QO of $1,030,189. If they felt he was easily bettered in free agency then I'm not sure why they'd do that and risk him signing the first minute he can. Again I don't share that high opinion of him, but maybe they see something I don't.

We extended QO to Marvin, Mario, Solomon, and Childress to make them RFAs. Othello Hunter didn't get a QO, but I expect him to be back at the 2nd year minimum.
