Update on Bibby/Zaza salaries, what's left ?

I updated the Hawks Salaries Information thread, based on what should be the 2009-10 salaries for Zaza and Bibby.

We knew the total amount and years, but not if the contracts would be flat, ascending or descending, which changes a lot on the room available under the tax.

Ascending contracts start at lower salaries, so more room now, and descending contracts start higher with less room now, but more next year, except than this time, it could be made not in order to have more room next year, but to prevent the possible lower tax threshold.

Anyway, Zaza is set to make 4,750,000 for 2009-10 according to ESPN trade machine, or using the ratio of RealGM Trade checker.
It means he will certainly have a flat contract, with 4,750,000 each year.

Other possibility, if they expect the numbers to go down next year, but back to normal in 2011:
4,750,000 - 4,251,250 - 4,750,000 - 5,248,750

It could be a brilliant choice on another point: if this roster ends near the three bigs in the East, and if they are ready to add a full MLE guy next summer, even if it push in Luxury tax (thinking the final roster would be a contender), it can add more room for next year in case the economy would not be so much bad and numbers would stay like this year.

Bibby will get 6,217,617 in 2009-10, and with a 18M/3yrs contract, it should mean he got a 3.5% descending contract :
6,217,617 - 6,000,000 - 5,782,383

Added to the seven players already under contract, it makes now 9 players for an estimated total of 55,131,080, so almost 14.2M under the tax.

Even if Marvin was re-signed for 40M/5yrs, and on a 10.5% descending contract, again to reduce salaries for next year in case of economic problem, he wold start at 10.13M, leaving 4M to fill the roster with 10 players under contract.
With 5% descending, he would start at 8.89M, adding 1.2M (5.2M of room) of room for this year.
Flat would add another 0.89M (6.1M of room), 5% ascending another 0.73M (6.83M of room), and 10.5% ascending another 0.66M, giving more than 7.5M of room left.

They certainly don't want to win now, but more want to evaluate this roster, so Marvin should get a flat or descending offer.
If the roster ends at 13 players, in the worst case, it's enough to at least add two minimum contracts, and one at 2M.

I hope it can help :)

Its sad to think about how well the Hawks would be set up right now if they hadn't made the Crawford trade. So many teams are going to be scrambling to reduce salary- the Hawks were in prime position and they blew it.

And I still think that any talk of the ASG paying the luxury tax for this team is just completely unrealistic. If the team went to at least game 6 of the conference finals this season then maybe they will shift gears and look at it but absent that I just don't see it being in the realm of possibility. And yes that makes it exceptionally tough to catch Boston, Orlando, or Cleveland that have all committed to paying the tax.
