Philly Interested In Flip Murray

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Mon Jul 27, 2009 4:42 pm

With Williams, Holiday and Willie Green the only full-fledged guards on the roster, Stefanski is continuing his search for a veteran. A source familiar with the situation confirmed some early contact concerning Atlanta Hawks unrestricted free agent Ronald "Flip" Murray (a Philadelphia native who played at Strawberry Mansion High), but said that Murray's agent is looking for more than a 1-year commitment. im gonna miss flip alot, he was so huge for us last year. I wish hhim the best
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

I'm not worried about losing Flip. He had a great year as the 6th man...but the truth is that the Hawks were the ONLY team in the NBA who offered him a guaranteed contract last year. His scoring efficiency was consistently awful year after year before joining the Hawks.

I'll miss Flip for sure, but he'd be an excellent fit in The Illadelph if they sign him. Relegating either Willie Green or Kapono to the 3rd string (likely Green... they need 3-pt shooters so bad) would be a plus for them. I'll miss Flip more if Craw doesn't measure up to expectations.

My personal opinion: I think Jamal Crawford is going to be an excellent addition to this team.
I like what I see about him and his makeup as a player.
His scoring has been very consistent and it is time he was part of a playoff team.

Flip (with all the flaws in his game) is better than pretty much everyone they got there in the backcourt. W. Green is just horrible. Now, that being said, he's not a PG, he can't dribble with consistency, he can't dish the ball out. THAT'S THE REASON WHY HE'S BEEN IN 6 DIFFERENT TEAMS IN THE LAST FEW SEASONS. That's also the reason why M. Bibby can get 6M a season at the age of 31. He's a true PG with infinite better court vision and much better 3 point shooting ability. He might not be good defensivelly, but he's a starting PG in this league. On the top of that, the Hawks decided to keep him among other reasons because everyone on the team loves to play with him (meaning he's not a ball hog), and because we have just drafted a guy named J. Teague, who's got the potential to be very good and he needed a winner to learn from. In 3 years, that Teague guy will be running your team, and I can't believe you'd want him to have learned from Murray instead of Bibby. I just can NOT.
GO HAWKS.

I'd have rather Teague learned from Murray compared to Crawford considering it would have come at 1/3 of the cost or even less. Hell- now it looks like it might not even take a multi year deal.

I don't understand the argument. Neither Murray nor Crawford would exactly be expected to be the mentor of Teague. Which one would be better at it or more cost effective isn't really an issue. Crawford was brought in because they evidently felt they needed more offensive production in that role. He was brought in to play not to mentor.

I thought Flip played very well last year, but I'm not sure how he fits into the Princeton style offense they plan to implement in Philly. Philadelphia insistence on a 1 year deal only will probably preclude them from really improving the PG situation anyway.

that whole mentor myth is such a weird concept that exists with some nba fans , that i really don't get. it sounds good but their are really no real world examples. it is not like the guys who sat behind Kidd, Payton, Billups, Nash, or Stockton where really that good. Bibby mentored Ronnie Price and Law, i am really hoping we are not resting the future of Teague on Bibby.

Bibby > Flip
Crawford > Flip

You guys don't need Flip all that much. Just develop Teague well and you should be good.

Flip was great for us. No way I want him here over Bibby.
