Joe extension?

"FA summer of 2010? Maybe not for ol' Joe. Sources: Hawks and JJ's camp talking extension this week in Cali."

This would be GREAT news if we could get Joe to sign an extension. Wow, what a sigh of relief that would be going into the offseason next year. Instead of worrying about Joe, we could think about possible trades/ signings to improve our club. I really hope something gets done.

I would highly approve of this IF he doesn't get a max extension. I hope Joe balances the team's best interests with the natural need to get paid, and takes only, say, 70% of the max, a la Tim Duncan. Otherwise, we won't have the room to sign any FAs.

Extension talks for Joe

Might the Hawks be interested in keeping captain and All-Star Joe Johnson off of the robust free agent market of 2010?

It seems so.

Multiple sources have confirmed that Hawks general manager Rick Sund is on an extended trip to the left coast, and part of his itinerary includes time in Los Angeles for face-to-face talks about a contract extension with Johnson’s camp (I mentioned this on Twitter late last night after hearing for sure that this was going on). A three-time All-Star, Johnson is heading into the final year of the five-year, $70 million deal he signed in August 2005 (which if traced back, you will realize was the rebirth of the franchise that has since made the playoffs in back-to-back years).

There’s plenty of time for these talks to progress, training camp is still nearly two months away. Just knowing that they are talking, though, is a good sign that the Hawks plan on taking a proactive approach where JJ is concerned. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks Link

I hope the Hawks reach an agreement with him. This is a situation where both the Hawks and JJ could benefit from. The Hawks won't be able to attract anyone near his talent if he leaves, and JJ will probably have to be the 2nd option if he decides to go somewhere else, something I'm assuming he doesn't want, since that's one of the reasons he left the Suns for us. Now, I think he'll get and deserves near the max. This guy has worked his ass off since he came here. Look at his stats and he's improved from year to year. JJ is not a guy I have any concerns about giving a max contract. He's a stud and shows up to play over 40 min a night no matter what.

This is why he shows up in 1 playoff game each year, right?

IMO Joe's not a legit max player like LeBron, Wade, Dwight, etc. He's good, but he shouldn't ask for and doesn't deserve max.

How Coach Woodson treats Joe Johnson: Time to limit the horses minutes now that we have Jamal Crawford.

If Brandon Roy receive 5 yrs, $82 million, I fully expect Joe to receive the same. I'd like to see Joe give us a small discount but I doubt it happens.

For some reason I really doubt it will happen but it would nice to get done before next summer. We gotta focus on trades/signings to improve the team bc im sure next year we will learn that were not good enough to compete in the east, and well need to make some moves.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

Brandon Roy gets his deal.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy(notes) has agreed to a five-year contract extension worth between $78 million and $82 million, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

The Blazers are planning a news conference with Roy on Thursday to announce the deal.

After several weeks of sometimes contentious negotiations, The Oregonian reported on Wednesday that the two sides were closing on an agreement. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=a ... &type=lgns

Do Atlanta fans actually think he's worth anywhere near the max? Not even a top 20 player in the league.

Every Hawk fan would prefer that Joe sign for less than the max. The question is whether you would rather let him walk for not compensation rather than pay him the max.

Now that your franchise has started to use some of that money in their pockets, don't start going cheap now. Regardless of the fact Joe may not be a superstar like lebron & Kobe, he is the best and the ONLY max player on YOUR roster.

I'm sure its not hard to see that the hawks have had their most recent success as soon as Joe joined the roster. Like others have said he gets better every year and plays big minutes for the team and should be paid rather than allowed to be snatched away.

Although I do agree, that the contract that Roy just signed would be a good fit for both sides.

Why are you even in this forum? JJ is a 3 time all-star and the centerpiece of the franchise. Your comment pretty much sums up your NBA knowledge or lack thereof.

We've covered this subject before they were negotiating. Joe Johnson has little incentive to sign early for anything less than the max (exception explained later). There will be enough teams looking to spend next summer that he'll likely receive a max offer from someone. The only thing that might prevent that would be an injury this year. That is also his biggest motivation to sign early (maybe only motivation).

I think it's in Atlanta's best interest to lock up Joe early regardless of price. I don't think they could successfully replace his contributions during the Atlanta's best competitive window. I also question whether he'd take the step back on minutes focusing on the long haul if he's worried about landing the big deal next summer. I'm not accusing him of selfish play, but the potential to over dribble is there. If he's already got his deal he can focus on doing what's best for the team without conflict.

You spelled my name wrong and JJ still sucks compared to the other 20 franchise players.

I would say Joe is around the 20-25 range... Off the top of my head, better SG/SFs

Kobe
Lebron
Wade
Roy
Melo
Durant
--------
Granger
JJ
VC
Manu
-------

The bracket around JJ is approximate, and could be argued around.

I like JJ, but not enough to give him a max deal.

I don't think he is worth max, and I don't think roy was worth max. Durant will be a stud even more so next year I fully expect individual t-mac like stats when he was in orl 30+ppg but his team will suck.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
