Hawks guard Joe Johnson was named Eastern Conference player of the week Monday after averaging 20.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists in four games. He shot 47.2 percent from the field in the four games.
The Hawks went 3-1 in the week, beating Portland, Denver and Sacramento while falling to Charlotte. It's the fifth time in his career that he's won the award.

I never turn down some recognition for the Hawks or their players, but I'm not certain I would have selected Joe as Atlanta Hawk of the week, let alone Eastern Conference player of the week. During the 3 wins Josh's all-around performance (more rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks) or Jamal Crawford with more points and assists and better shooting % than Joe.

When I heard this I was ... LOL.

Jamaal Crawford has thus far better performances then him. I saw every Hawks game since now, and I must say Crawford is the difference between the Hawks and other teams.
Player of the week in the Eastern Conference? Come on…

This entire "Joe vs. Crawford" debate is getting pretty annoying.

What debate? We need them both playing well to be successful. I would have liked to have seen Josh Smith rewarded with player of the week. While his scoring wasn't as high as Joe or Jamal, his all around game was impressive. I'd like to see that sort of play reinforced with some recognition.

No...I'm not disagreeing with your post at all. It's just that reading the game threads and a few others....I'm getting the feeling that the theme of this season is going to be the non-stop comparisons between Crawford and Joe despite the fact that the team is doing well. It's almost getting as annoying as the number of threads dedicated to the lack of playing time of Acie Law(and I was originally for that side of the debate pre-Bibby trade).

Ran across this on a post about early choices for all-star

Very nice.

Smoove has been a wonderful revelation and Crawford has been unstoppable at times, but, come on, Joe's earned this honor. He's maintained his offensive game while playing really, really first-rate defense.
I was worried about his recent statement but don't let that take away from what he's earned on the court.
And don't worry about Smoove not getting the recognition; if he keeps playing like he has, he'll get much more than just player of the week.

Don't get me wrong, Joe didn't have a bad week. I think it's a matter of most of us here watching the whole games and the actual voters probably just going off some highlights. One thing Joe did do in those games was apply himself in the 4th quarter. Maybe the crunch time effort in those games was the deciding factor.
I just hope we're having this type of discussion multiple times this year where we argue about which Hawk most deserved the conference player of the week or month. If that happens (multiple Hawks worthy of recognition) life will be pretty sweet.

I wouldn't say Joe's play has been disappointing. I wouldn't say I've been impressed by it either though. From a numbers perspective, his first season here he put up better numbers for an entire season and didn't even make the all-star game. From an impact perspective, for the first time in his ATL tenure Joe is not at the top of our 82 games roland (adjusted +/-) rankings. He's a distant 5th after the non-Marvin starters and Crawford.
His shot selection has been questionable, his passing has been non-existent, and his attitude has been more sour than usual even though the team is better than its been since he's gotten here.
He's giving us 20ppg on OK efficiency and playing solid D on the wings, so I'll take it. I hope he stays here for his next contract. I just don't see any rationale whatsoever in him getting this award.
