Josh Smith Explains Why He Refuses To Shoot Threes This Year

Josh Smith has not attempted a 3-pointer this season and his field goal percentage is much improved because of it.
"I wanted to focus on driving to the lane and making mid-range shots," Smith said about abandoning the long ball. "We got a lot of guys on this team who can hit it from behind the arc so it allows me to focus on other things." Smith is hitting a ridiculous 59 percent from the field this year, but is unfortunately hitting free throws at the same rate.

Yep, because they won't go in the hoop as much as i want them to so after 5 years of playing in this league i will try the method everyone and their Grandma has suggested. Playing inside that round circle where Bibby and Joe them shoot from a lot.
It's called Woody's early Christmas present.

Y'all can forget the insults in this case. Smoove needs to lose the 3 pt. shot because he has something better. Seriously, he's too athletic to stop when he goes to the basket. He can score on drives like few men can and he'll cash in on a truckload of fouls. He should never cheat himself with 3's.

Agreed. I'd actually say that Smith is the 2nd best player under 6'10 in the league besides Lebron at converting shots when he's by the basket. He's also a good passer as well.
I wonder if Sund said something to Smith in the summer about his 3 point attempts?

Smith is scoring 10 ppg inside shooting 70%. As far as I know the only guy scoring inside more than Smith is Howard.
http://www.82games.com/0910/09ATL7.HTMToo bad Smiths idea of a mid range shot is one step inside the 3 pt line. He is shooting a dismal 32% on jumpers.

^^^Yeah. If he must take anything outside 8 feet, I'd prefer it be a three. Pulls his defender far away from the basket (sort of).

What is a true shame is that Joe and Jamal are shooting at Josh's career 3 pt % right now (approx 27%), so as a team our 3 Pt effectiveness is quite a bit off of last year. Not asking them to stop shooting 3s just to return to their previous form while Josh operates in the paint.

boston fan here. Good for him giving up the 3's. Maybe he is starting to get it. Fatoine when he was with the celts never got it. Tonights game is going to be exciting.

Glad Smoove matured and figured this out for himself. He worked on the three-ball and gave it a try, but I think we've all come to the conclusion that it just isn't an effective part of his game, good to see he feels the same way.

That really doesn't bother me. The team is still scoring well without their 3s and their 3 pt problems haven't cost the Hawks any games. Plus three point shooting will always be up and down even for the best shooters.
Tonight would be a good time for them to start hitting though.

what seperates the good players from the great players is the ability to get to the basket when ever they want.
Josh's skills are still unrefined, but he has one thing above Joe and any other Hawk, Smoove is the best guy on the team at getting to the rim
