What's going on with Marvin Williams

Post#1 » by PerkinsFor3 » Tue Nov 17, 2009 12:55 pm

I must admit I forgot about him, and he's been off the radar so far. Is he hurt? Just in a funk?

I kinda expected him to take that next step this year and become a Rashard Lewis type of player.

In a shooting slump. He seems to be having trouble finding ways to contribute offensively.

Definitely struggling offensively... I will say that he looked very good last night defending Roy. That is probably the toughest Roy has had to work since they moved him to the 3.

He is also the 5th offensive option on the team, possibly 6th. The team just has a lot of scorers already and Marvin doesn't get the ball a ton.

Marvin is the one guy on this team I am legitimately worried about. His confidence is completely gone and he is starting to play scared, resulting in multiple plays that just aren't acceptable a la the two horrendous inbound passes last night and the jump shot that came off the side of the backboard. He has always seemed like a player that is somewhat fragile mentally to me, so when I see him go through a stretch like this I wonder just how long it will take him to snap out of it.

In other news, the guy behind me at the game referring to him as "Dookie" from the Wire was pretty damn hilarious.

He's off-rhythm. It looks to me that he's thinking, "They gave me the ball. Better throw up a shot right now." He doesn't set his feet, he doesn't dribble to get straightened out and - recently - I don't think he waits to shoot until he feels right. He just looks uncomfortable.

Buuuut, many player struggle after receiving a big payday. I guess they feel that they need to justify their money and they press too hard. Hopefully, he'll get comfortable soon.

I've decided that Woodson's "system" is that everyone goes one-on-one. Maybe the intention is for the ball to swing to the defense's weakest link for an isolation.

If Marvelous has really improved his ball-handling as he said was his plan .....

Marvin's game is very limited. He can't creat his own shot, most likely cause he can't dribble neither use his body to find some space down in the post. I agree with Josh about the mental part of his game. He's very weak, different than for example, Smith in that aspect, who can screw a few plays and then move on. I'm very disappointed with what I've seen from him this season anyway. He can't even in bound the ball anymore. Even Mo Evans is more aggressive than him. That tells you something about the NC guy.

Defensively, he's pretty solid. He's long enough and quick enough to guard good perimeter players. He's not a "stopper" per se, but he makes people work and gives Joe Johnson some rest.

Offensively, he basically just stinks. He has terrible balance and below average ballhandling so he can't get to the rim from the perimeter. And he's too weak/soft to post anyone up. He is limited to spot up shooting at this point.

Basically, a poor man's version of Bruce Bowen.

Im sure hell find a way into this offense sooner or later, but we need him to give us quailty minutes so we dont have to over utilize Crawford. Im not worried yet, but he sure hasnt show any signs. He doesnt exactly thrive in a iso prone offense so they need more ball movement so he can spot up and let it rainl
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

I agree with the notion that mentally he doesn't have it together. If he ever returns to the form he had last year, this team will be that much better. He does not ever need to worry about living up to that #2 pick. We all know he can't ever do that. But if he can be our James Posey type of guy, that would be great

he hasnt even been that good defensively this year either.

he has just flat out sucked 90% of the time. he isnt just not sinking his shots. dude cant even inbound the ball, he is missing breakaway dunks, and heck im suprised he can even tie his own shoes right now.

pretty disapointing as i liked how he played last year. he has probably been the worst guy in the rotation tyis year

and this is coming from some one who has always defended marvin and smith since ive signed up here

He's not. Marvin could be posting a 20/8 line and people would still be bitching about him.

So he's in a bit of a funk (which incidentally, he seems to be breaking out of). Big deal, it happens,to everyone. I noticed that few people were getting on Joe's back in January when he was averaging 18/7/4 on 37% shooting, while MURDERING our ball movement and offense.

Seriously, our win rate is inversely proportional to how much Joe touches the ball the first three quarters. Joe ball hogs, stalls the offense, takes a disproportionate amount of bad shots, and turns our team to a jumpshooting team. He unfortunately happens to be our best player. On the other hand, Marvin always plays within his capabilities, takes good shots, rebounds, defends, passes, and is constantly making improvements to his game. Does he make mistakes? Of course, everyone does. Could he be more aggressive at times? Yes. Should he have been the second pick in the draft? Hell no. Does this make him a bad player? Not in the least. If Joe played the same way Marvin did, he would be a less athletic Kobe.

I notice everyone ragging on Marvin are the same people that ragged on Josh for making dumb plays last year, and then claiming that it was just 'tough love.' It's not, especially when you're making stupid comments, such as that Marvin was the 2nd worst draft decision made in the past 25 years. That's not 'tough love,' that's being an unsupportive tool who has no historical knowledge.
