ASG Reserves and Reactions (David Lee In)

Post#1 » by evildallas » Thu Jan 28, 2010 7:19 pm

According to the leak Congrats to Joe and Al, but Josh gets no love. Crash got the last forward nod. Sadly, I got to wonder how Josh will respond to this the rest of the season. It could be motivation or it could negatively affect him.

I just hope Josh takes it well and stays motivated, but I would think it's going to hurt him.

Yeah, this is the first thing that popped into my mind. He either gets mad and tries even harder to prove everyone wrong, or he gets mad and sulks.

Got appreciate the number of Hawks fans over on the General board fighting the good fight on the snub thread. It does make me realize that all in all I think we're a very polite fan base.

From Twitter:
@johnhollinger Horford and Johnson made the All-Star team and Josh Smith didn't. I guess nobody actually watched the Hawks this year

Im not happy about this. Josh deserved this. AL deserved it but Josh was more deserving. It scares me that Josh will be hurt by this and it will effect his play. On the other hadn I think that hes grown so much that he can use this as motivation. Well see! Congrats Joe and Al
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

Mark Bradley article on the selections

Some good quotes:

And I’m not the only one who’s disappointed. Here’s co-owner Michael Gearon Jr.: “Josh Smith is an All-Star and he deserves to be there. He deserves to make that team as much as any of the players who were selected. He is an All-Star, and he’s the heart and soul of our team. He deserves to be there.”

From general manager Rick Sund: “There area lot of players in the NBA who put up All-Star numbers, and then there are players who are All-Star players. Josh is an All-Star player.”

Hopefully the rally of support for Josh will help mitigate any sulking or negative effect on his play.

Hope Josh will stay focus, and get motivated.

But regarding the choices, there is nearly no surprise.
Like I said in this post, the players are nearly the ones at the top of the Efficiency stat, except if they are playing in losing teams, and... :

Guards: 1 Wade 2 Rondo 3 Johnson 4 Arenas 5 Rose (22 Iverson)
Forward: 1 James 2 Bosh 3 Wallace 4 Smith 5 Jamison * 6 Iguodala (9 Garnett 10 Pierce)
Center: 1 Lee 2 Howard 3 Lopez 4 Horford 5 Bogut

* Very Strange thing: if you look at the capture of my other post, you will see that Iguodala was in the guards category before today (or yesterday).
And with his 20 Eff, he was 2nd in the Guards list.
Now, the NBA changed him, and put Iguodala in the Forwards category, where he's only 6th with the same Eff. As they did not choose any players of a losing team, they did not need to do such a thing, but as it simplify the choice, I have the feeling that they are (more than I thought) seriously loooking at the Eff stat to make their choices.

I couldn't be happier for Al Horford. He deserves it due to his game, ethic, respect for the game, and consistency. I've been saying that for a while, he's every coach's dream. Very often we hear opponent coaches praising his game. I'm not so surprised J. Smith didn't make it. The reserves are picked by the coaches, and I'm not so sure how many of them think he's as great as most around here do. I'm also happy for Z. Randolph in the West. That guy's got game, he's a monster inside, it's all about being at the right place in the right system for him.
GO HAWKS.

I risk bad karma, but I kind of hope that Garnett turns up lame again so Bosh can start and Josh get named as a replacement. Of course, there's no guarantee that David Lee wouldn't get the call as a lot of "pundits" have been lobbying for him on air.

Can we give Joe Johnson some love for getting named to his 4th allstar game and Al his 1st?
Seriously we got two Hawks in and Josh could still make it if KG sits and there's always, you know, the rest of his 20s to go.

Two Hawks.....

All Stars......

I'm very happy for Al and Joe...but I'm a little shocked that Al and Rose made it over Josh and Lee.

I would suggest some sort of fan support during Friday's game like a banner or sign that says "Josh is our All-Star", but any slogan I think of seems to unintentional diss Al and Joe. I want to boost Josh's spirits, but not slight another Hawk to do it.

The unveiling of the poll of who was a snub (Josh, Mo Williams, David Lee, Andrew Bogut) prompted Charles to say that David Lee was the only one of those that had a case to be an All-Star. Live TV can lead to diarrhea of the mouth.

Smith was easily the biggest snub in the East...followed by Bogut. I thought Lee was a lock because he played in NY...but Bogut(who I knew had no chance)had a much better case to be an all-star when you factor in far superior defense. I really think it came down to Rose coming on strong and taking Lee's spot(although I don't think either should have made it) and the coaches just like Horford more than Josh as the "obligatory 2nd Hawk" for some reason.

The TNT crew seems to be campaigning heavily for David Lee. I guess winning isn't that important to them.
