Guys, I know this has been brought up before. Am I the alone in thinking we would be a better team in the future if we don't resign Joe? I personnely think we've seen his best.

I don't see how we would be a better team without him.

I don't think signing Joe to the max would be smart...but it would not make the Hawks better on the court if they lost him for nothing.

I know this might be impossible, but could JJ consider heading to Boston in a sign-and-trade to replace Ray Allen? Not sure if JJ could get enough $$ from Boston to do that, but it would be interesting to think what we could get in return?

Short term we become worse.
Long term we become far better off than if we have a 35 year old Joe Johnson eating up 40% of our capspace with a max 6 years from now.

Yes, that was my point. we may have to take a step back, but in the long run I beleive we'd be a better team. Also, I like woody but I think we need a better x's o's coach

QFT -- and I love Joe.
But paying him a max contract when he stymies our offense aint the way. He shoots almost like Kobe or Wade without the high 4th qtr success and without the FTs.
Paid handsomely to be a major part of our team is one thing;
overpaying him to be our savior is another, entirely. Especially since he isn't able to be that savior.

I'll tell y'all something else, as well: if that unnamed GM who is accusing Joe of having a deal to sign with the Knicks is right, then Joe's a dog. He could have told us his intentions in time for us to trade him.

What concerns me about this is that an article came out not long ago that Jamal Crawford has been talking to Joe about what he can expect from the New York organization/media. So, there could be some truth here.

Would hate to see Joe go, but if he doe's, who's our next 2guard? Does Craw move into the starting rotation or do the Hawks make a move for someone else and keep Craw as the 6man?

So you want the Hawks to be an average team for next several more years instead of continue to grow and being in the hunt for the title? If JJ leaves, the Hawks will be worse and if they become bad the owners will try too trade away players which will result in another period of dismal seasons. Let's don't try to be the Pistons and think they can get better by trading away their best player.

Joe is clearly leaving. Once he leaves, this team is done. Crawford cant start, and we wont be able to lure any top FAs.
As much as we hate iso-Joe and his selfish play at times, without him we wouldnt be even top 8. Its been a nice run though.

Dude, JJ gives us 21 ppg and is a good player. I believe that the drop off would not be that much. and if josh and al continue to inprove and we ad a piece or two we will be fine. as a fane I rather take that gamble that pay joe a 82mil plus and he gets old on us. AS LONG AS WE BUILD AROUND AL & JOSH I'M COOL!. I'D TRADE EVERBODY EXCEPT JOSH & AL FOR CRISS PAUL!! WE'D BE SMOKEN!

AND NO!... NOT CRACK!

Joe is sick at times - making some the most ridiculous shots. He has always played solid defense too. Plus, his size and athleticism is hard to beat at the 2 or even 3. He's going to continue being a force in the league for another 3-4 years. The question is how much is that truly worth. The Hawks are in an awkward position in that they know we can't afford to pay him max and expect this team to remain competitive (unless the owners pony up). So, we're looking at a short time period of watching the bigger chips fall (LeBron, Wade, ...) before Joe's number is called. Either the Hawks get it done at a reasonable price, or they decide to start over. IF the ASG decide they believe in Joe and this team as it stands, they might be willing to make it happen. But that's a stretch.

Look up, is your sky falling?? Stay with the positivity.
By the way, this thread shows me how truly under appreciated JJ is to most Hawks fans. It's a shame and i wouldn't be surprised if he does leave, the physical(get your asses in the seats) and the mentally(think he is easily expendable) fans are really showing their hideous faces on blogs and message boards all over the net. Shameful!

Knick fan here. I agree with you guys that a 6year max contract wouldn't be good value for Joe as he'd be too old and eating up too much capspace. As a knick fan, if the Knicks have a chance at him I'd like to see 4-5 year deal at say 14mill. per year. That IMO is a fair price for Johnson.
That being said I truly believe that you guys might underestimate the worth of a player like Johnson. IMO he's the glue that holds the team together---sure you guys have nice pieces in Josh and Al but without Johnson I see you guys struggle to make the playoffs but good enough to not get a high pick. You'd be stuck as a 35-40 win team IMO and that is something that might hurt in the long run.
Anyways good luck to you guys and hopefully you can make some serious noise in the playoffs....

Repeating myself from the past: I would be content with a 5 year deal like the one Brandon Roy signed. I'm not prepared for us to not have a star player and I disagree with any of you if you believe Josh Smith & Al Horford have reached that level. Jamal Crawford would be able to average 20ppg, but he won't do the little things Joe does, and one of the advantages Joe has over his opponents is his height.
Memphis with Rudy Gay is similar to us with Joe Johnson because of the lack of fans.
Average Attendance Hawks 21st , Memphis 29th.
Michael Heisley Memphis Owner: "People say are you going to pay Rudy Gay? My answer to them is simply, 'Are you going to come to the games?'" Heisley said. "If I can't get people to come to the games, I can't pay anybody."

Yes, your right... I do under value joe but I'm a fan of this team since they blow it up 7 years ago.
I know how valuble he is and like most guy on this board I really don't want him to go. I would ne even mind over playing for his services (5yrs ~ 15mil year) for what he's done for us. personnely, I think not signing him last year was a best case going into these playoff. If he balls out out and provides good leadership he will get payed! If during the playoff Josh or Al assumes more of a leadership role than ASG may opt to spend the liminted resoursces elsewere.

Im one of the fans that realize how important he is for our team. He can drive you crazy but he is a great player.
Ive been keeping it positive more than most Hawk fans. I just havent read or seen anything that would indicate he wants to stay. I hope he stays but it seems were gonna have to overpay for him to stay. The right decision from a management standpoint would be to let him go if he asks for to much money. If we let him walk for that reason everyone will bash management. This is a business. Him staying could give us a 2-3 year window at making a run.
It doesnt seem possible for Josh and Al to lead us to a championship. As great as they are they dont provide enough offensively.
