Jayson Tatum 2nd season expectations thread
Holy Hype Batman! I loved watching Tatum in the playoffs and during the regular season last year. He is my favorite Celtics Rookie since Paul Pierce, I think eventually he is going to be an All star and maybe a superstar. I love that he got respects from the greats and worked out with the likes of Kobe, but it has only been a few months since he was last on a court I don't really know quite how much better he will be then the end regular season, if he will be as good as he was In the playoffs or better.
With that said he is coming into a different situation then last years playoff teams, JB is healthy, so is Kyrie and GH and there is only 1 ball. What are your realistic expectations for Tatum this season. Does he become an all star right away or is he simply a little better then he was last year, perhaps all the hype and Kobe talk will go to his head and he will regress (I don't think this will happen) but what are your thoughts? How many points per game rebounds and assists does he get, does he make any all star or all nba teams THIS season?
Fixed the typo in the title

Re: Jason Tatum 2nd season expectations thread
I'm not even sure where the Kobe comparisons come from, because I don't think his game is much like Kobe's at all. I think he is more Pierce than he is Kobe.
As far as expectations, I expect him to take a leap and be consistent. Do I expect him to make the All-Star team? It will be tough, because we have to keep in mind that we have so many other stars on this team that he may not get the amount of touches needed to put up All-Star numbers.
I expect him to average around 17-18 PPG on terrific efficiency. I also expect him to take things to the next level defensively and become a truly disruptive force on that end.

Re: Jason Tatum 2nd season expectations thread
In the good old days this team had the luxury of letting the next generation of star talent work its way in gradually, on championship-caliber (and usually championship-winning) teams.
I hope we're back to that with Tatum and Jaylen. Meaning something like 14 and 5 averages; pump the breaks on the individual hype train but try to help the team win a title. Work on defense, playmaking, strength, FTs, you name it (some of these are for JT and some for JB). There's worse things than playing in the Finals -- perhaps multiple times -- before your first ASG. All-NBA level someday is possible but not a shoe-in for me and hopefully that sort of thinking hasn't taken hold of his/his people's thinking -- it's key for us that he stay humble and hungry.
Edit: also it's Jayson with a y.

Re: Jason Tatum 2nd season expectations thread
There was a stretch during last nights game where he showed his full potential on the offensive end. He is a unique mix of young Melo, Kobe, KD, and PP, able to score in so many ways. Posting up, off the dribble, mid-range, 3ball, finishing around the rim, coming off screens- he really has no weaknesses. It’s tantalizing to say the least. Right now he’s the second most talented player on the C’s and he’s only 20 years old!

Re: Jason Tatum 2nd season expectations thread
Right now, I think he is likely our third best player behind Irving and Horford. Hayward still up in the air until he can show he can regain form and become the old Gordon. I put Horford up there who many can ignore, he's not always sexy but I consider him the glue of this team at times. I am a fan of reliable experienced vets, I am hoping Irving/Horford are healthy and ready to go for the playoffs (a long time away) and Gordon too. If they are I expect to be in the finals.
I also hate this Kobe stuff, can we stop? lol Irving had a Kobe fetish it sounded like too when he was on the Cavs (may have been to bug Lebron too though) but he seems to have chilled out on a lot of that coming to Boston. I personally didn't love Tatum working with Kobe either. Like Valid said, he is more Pierce to me then Kobe. But Kobe is who Tatum idolized and still does.
Tatum is a huge talent and looks to be bigger and stronger this year too. But sometimes the hype after one year can get crazy. But I would not trade him for any of the other young guys that get lumped together with him either.
I think he will be great at times this year but sometimes yes a sophomore slump can happen at times too. I expect Jaylen Brown to take some big leaps in his third year. The funny thing is while I am more of a fan of Tatum's game and skill set, I am more of a fan of Brown's personality and vibe, Tatum seems more like the quiet one. I love the mix of those two together.
I think being an all star this year is very possible but not 100% likely due to the amount of capable guys on this team.

I'm guessing that a core reserves lineup will feature:
Rozier and/or Smart
Hayward
Tatum
Baynes and/or Theis
I think Tatum will score in bunches in that kind of grouping.
But I also think teams will focus on defending him in such lineups. and it may take another season or so before he learns to thoroughly overcome that kind of attention.

People watched his fadeaway shots and his summer training with Kobe. I'm assuming that's where the comparisons are coming from.
I'm not expecting his PPG to rise any higher than 15, but even without his scoring I think his impact will be huge. Just his presence alone should be enough to win games.

Borderline all star. He’s looking for his offense now and not passing up wide open looks. That’s a scary thing for the NBA

Re: Jayson Tatum 2nd season expectations thread
Depends on the offense we're running.
Preseason we seem to be running the bull ISO offense like we're the Rockets.
If we run the motion offense like early Stevens, college Stevens, like the Warriors system then the sky is the limit for Tatum.
If it's junk ISO offense then he'll put up some decent stats on crap efficiency and no playmaking.
Motion offense we're looking at a potential 20 ppg on 48/42/85 efficiency. His teammates will make it a priority to look for him for open 3s.

CBS basically said he is letting them feel their way through these games, I think for chemistry purposes. He said he will add more structure as they go along. So expect it to look much better with more games under their belt. It already got better from g1 to 2 IMO (in some spots). These aren't direct quotes but it's what I took from it.
It is ugly but nowhere close to a finished product, we have to be patient.

Pierce said he wanted to work out with Tatum this offseason--but obviously Tatum chose Kobe instead. And if the team is good, more than just Kyrie and Al will be ASs. Gordon probably not in true form in time and IMO Tatum ahead of Brown. At worst, I think he goes as an injury replacement.

I think Hayward will steal some boards so 14 for Tatum may be a bit high, the rest is spot on though.

What he did in the playoffs but more efficient. Too many mouths to feed to put up the numbers he's capable of.

I think it's going to take a step back this year. Irving will be the number one scorer and while I think Hayward won't ever put up the same numbers he's going to take minutes and shots away from Tatum.

Left out ROY. If Ben Simmons can get it in his second year, so can Tatum.
