great now this **** guy is gonna become an all star. our player development has been garbage for players drafted outside of the top 10.

You get the feeling Joe is not a big fan of young players. Maybe that will change in his second year who knows? Ime was similar. Stevens was the last coach who used to play the young players so they can develop.

I think it's more that they are contenders than the coaches not liking young players. Rob developed. Grant developed. Hauser developed a little. Pritchard a little pre-Brogdon.
I'd love to see them sacrifice some wins regular season and go 10-11 deep, but first year coaches trying to win aren't going to be as comfortable doing that. Like you said, maybe this year Joe will be able to a little more.

I agree with you 100%. My guess is the team figures it'll be dancing too close to the second apron for a while, and these $50K could be the difference between being on the right or the wrong side of the line.
Yeah I agree, they should have given him the $50K, and then waived him.

Before parting ways with Champagnie, Boston was $2.3 million under the second apron, per Spotrac. This move gives the C's $4.2 million in breathing room below that threshold.
It also gives the Celtics two full-time roster openings. They must fill at least one. They also have a two-way spot available.
And while this was a financially motivated decision, Boston's expressed interest in signing Austin Rivers, per the Globe's Gary Washburn. They've done the same with two-guard Terence Davis, who remains available. And from Christian Wood to bringing Blake Griffin back, other familiar faces, a veteran 3&D wing, and younger players brimming with upside, there are still intriguing options on the open market.

Re: Appreciation Thread, Justin Champagnie!
I actually think contenders have more incentive to sign cheap, young prospects than rebuilding teams.
Rebuilding teams usually have rosters full of young prospects, adding another to the mix just muddies waters, they need vets to help maintain morale and set examples for their young'uns. Chances are, they can afford to add via free agency in coming seasons.
A contending team should have a ~8 man playoff rotation ready to go, a couple of backups to help with the unexpected, beyond that every other roster spot should be either a veteran presence who provides leadership, or a prospect with potential. Prospects can turn into trade value, or simply be groomed to contribute seasons down the line when the team can't afford to bring everyone back and does not have cap room to work with.
That said, especially with modern CBA rules, a contender has to try and make every penny count. Champagnie is not an NBA player right now, he doesn't offer big upside for the future, and we had no business paying him anything. This was the right decision IMO.
