It's a bummer. It hasn't worked out great these past couple of years when we have signed local guys (Jake Layman, Noah Vonleh, Wenyen Gabriel).

Wenyen is a good dude. Wish him the best of luck. Hopefully since we waived him during the morning right after our last preseason game, he'll have a chance to get signed by another team. A team like Orlando or possibly Chicago could use another center.

If not, he could go overseas where he could get a lot more playing time and possibly more money.

This move leaves us a little bit thin at the center position with just KP (injury history), Al (37 yrs old), Kornet (ok player at best) and Queta (on a 2-way). Last season we carried 5 centers for pretty much the entire season. 6 if you count Grant..7 if you count Kabengele.

So we'll see what happens next. For another big, I would think we either convert Queta or possibly sign Blake..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

Queta has played well but I’m kinda surprised by this. Wenyen wasn’t going to hurt us during garbage time, wasn’t at a position we have an abundance of, and seemingly no obvious choice to take his place on the roster.

I feel like I jinxed him publicly removing him as a binky in the thread. My apologies sir!

It feels like something is up (Blake?). Interesting timing

I think we’re full of good vibes and would rather have had the energy of Gabriel. But what do I know. The retired mod is Brad not me :dontknow:

I'm in need of a replacement binky now as well. I had Walsh, Steward and Gabriel; now it looks like Queta moves up into the binky rotation.

Sorry to see Gabriel waived. He's a really great guy it seems, and a hero in South Sudan. I hope he makes it on another team, it's a shame it couldn't be close to home with the Celtics.

I think the team needs another vet in that backup big department. Queta really showed that he can be the young guy with potential, but maybe not ready to be relied on yet.

Maybe. Now that camp and preseason are over, the team can take Blake out of the moth balls, remove the ice pads for his knees and roll him out for start of the season. If he's been working out, he can get into playing shape slowly, and spot Al and 'Staps by December.

When was the last time the Celtics signed an NBA caliber free agent at any salary and cut them before the season started? It feels like we’re desperate to get any signing we can in the past and never had a consideration of waiving them unless I’m completely forgetting someone(s). Even if I am forgetting a player, usually it’s us hoping for someone else’s scraps they’ve waived.

Garrison Matthews during the 2021 camp. He was coming of a year where he started 24 games for a Wizards team that made the playoffs so he was fairly established in the NBA and after being cut he went on to sign for Houston and started 33 games so it's not like he disappeared after the Celtics released him either. He just lost the battle with Hauser for sniper off the bench and unlike the Javonte Green/Max Strus camp battle from a few years back the Celtics got that decision correct.

I still want a hustle rebounder added, preferably one who could play alongside KP or Al.

Big Makur Maker signing! Maybe they just want to keep that spot open and are impressed with Quieta. Id see it more likely that he gets converted and they use a two way on someone then vice versa.

Not surprising. If they were going to waive someone it seemed Gabriel was the clear choice based on preseason performance. His work in training sessions must not have shown more.

Bouncy and high energy but didn’t seem to have a clear mind.

Given we’re over the second apron it may be they want to be able to move fast to sign someone else if they are waived prior to the season starts who make over the MLE. It could just be flexibility too I guess.

Time for Charlotte to waive Hayward please.

Gabriel was disappointing. I definitely expected more from a guy who had played serious regular season minutes for a solid team. Yeah he was new but it's not like we were asking him to run the team. Queta outplayed him easily.
