Game on the line- who is taking the shot?

Post#1 » by TheSheriff » Tue Jan 9, 2024 3:36 pm

The Celtics have the best starting five in the NBA. Al Horford is a good (past prime) leader and former all-star. Nevertheless, they have lost some games that have come down to a final shot.

In the closing seconds of a game down or tied, who do you want taking the shot? This seems to obviously be Tatum, but maybe some people disagree.

If Tatum is unavailable, who else would you want taking the final shot?

Make the right play. Don’t really care who takes final shot.

I don't want some predetermined person to take it. Play ball, make the right play. It really is that simple. Or at least, it should be.

Idc who takes the last shot as long as its a good shot but I think Kristaps should be involved way more than he is on final possessions

In an ideal world you work the ball around in a half-court set and produce an open look for any one of the 5 guys out there. I'd much rather Jaylen/Jrue/Derrick/Al take a wide open look than a contested jumper from KP or JT.

That being said, we have a superstar who has shown he can be clutch when it matters, so if I've got to put the ball in one guy's hands to close out a game then JT gets it without question.

KP is the next man up. He's an all-NBA scoring talent as well and with his size/length he should be able to get a relatively open look at the basket. Let teams over-correct on JT and hopefully that gives KP a better look (or potentially sets him up for a quick pass to a wide open "player X", which again would 100% be my preference).

Brad's greatest skillset, in my opinion, when he was on the bench was his ability to draw up really effective ATO plays. I sincerely hope that Joe draws on that ability and works with Brad to develop a number of pre-packaged options to roll out for various scenarios and he can effectively choose off a menu for whatever suits the given situation best. With 5 guys out there that I'd be comfortable taking the final shot if it's an open look, that gives you such an array of options that we should never have to settle for a clear-out one-on-one Kobe-esque fadeaway from someone. That just feels lazy given the talent we have out there.

True.

That's the most ideal scenario.

Makes it more unpredictable compared to just going iso.

Related: Last 10 seconds of regulation/OT with Cs ahead or behind by 3 pts or less...

1/9 from the field, 0/3 from 3, 6/10 from FT. Not that clutch lol. 6-6 in those games.

Tbf, Denver last season, similar scenario as above...

2/16 from the field, 2/9 from 3, 10/12 from FT. But won more -- 13-6 in those games.

I know everyone said play the right way and make the right play,

but I'm partial to Tatum or Porzingis.

Exactly. 2 of the biggest shots the Bulls hit during Jordan's career were by Steve Kerr and John Paxson..

Does that mean MJ couldn't hit big shots? Of course not. MJ hit tons of big shots. But you need to have options, because the defense is gonna try to take the MJ option away, double (or even triple) team him..so other guys need to be able to step up and hit a big shot.

Same thing with us. Teams will try to take the tatum option away, so other guys need to step up and hit big shots, like we have seen Al and Derrick do, we've seen KP hit big shots, etc. It's a team game..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

The ball should be in either White or Tatum’s hands, and I’m comfortable with whatever they do, for the most part. Tatum catching the ball in a good position with White initiating would work.
