I'm a little surprised that the Celtics could not find a better role for JVG to keep him away from the Clippers. And I can't believe JVG is willing at this stage to hit the road for 41+ games. Business travel sucks.

With all he's gone through this past year, he probably wants to stay busy.

Charles Lee, Sam Cassell and JVG all out the door? Who’s left?

Himmelsbach:

There were reports that Celtics senior consultant Jeff Van Gundy might replace associate head coach Charles Lee, who was hired to coach the Hornets. But according to a league source, both sides agreed it would be best for Van Gundy to accept an offer to become the Clippers’ top assistant instead.

The Celtics, the source said, were somewhat uneasy about the prospect of Van Gundy leapfrogging members of the coaching staff who had been instrumental in this championship season, and Van Gundy agreed. But there is unanimous sentiment that Van Gundy was an invaluable sounding board for the young staff this season.

Look for the Celtics to fill Lee’s position by promoting from within.

https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-celtics/2024/06/20/jeff-van-gundy-grateful-stint-with-celtics-clippers-chad-finn/

“Joe [Mazzulla] did a masterful job of getting different personalities with different strengths. And they’re superior teachers. So I learned a lot and I really, really enjoyed them, too. They’re just really good people.

“And the players, when I say drama-free, that’s not doing drama-free justice. People don’t believe when I say this, there was not one issue this year. Not one. Not one team issue, not one guy late, not one.”

Van Gundy said the sacrifices made by individual Celtics players for the betterment of the whole should not be taken for granted.

“You couldn’t have had a more perfect start-to-finish year. And I think it goes to their talent, but also, the word ‘sacrifice’ gets thrown around a lot, but they invested in their team on a daily basis knowing they can’t get everything they want all the time.

“And so it was such a dominant, impressive performance that it almost became mundane to many that were observing it. But it was anything but easy. It was hard to do. And those guys should be celebrated.”

He also echoed similar sentiments in his guest appearance with Zach Lowe on recent Lowe Post pod.

To make matters even worse for ESPN, the reason the network gave for firing Van Gundy was that it was worried he wanted to go back into coaching. So ESPN hired Doc Rivers, who promptly went back into coaching. Then ESPN elevated Redick.

Probably smart to elevate Perk then. No worries of becoming a head coach at all.

Bold of you to say that when the Detroit Pistons have a coaching opening and they are the Detroit Pistons.

Cassell still here and likely to get promoted into Lee's role. Be good to get another experienced guy like a Stephen Silas or Dave Joerger. Also thought Adrian Griffin seemed solid and has ties to the Celtics... Rondo being considered by Lakers.

Also Damon Stoudamire, didn't get fired or anything, but didn't have a great first year at Georgia Tech.

Posey still an assistant with the Wiz, have to think he'd jump ship and come here for a small raise...

Cassell is still here.

JVG was not on the coaching staff. He was just a consultant.

We only lost 1 coach off last year's team.

Rumor has it, Cassell will take the Lead Assistant job that Lee had..so we only have 1 assistant coach opening to fill. Which might be a promotion for one of our player development coaches. Then maybe you promote a video coordinator (or perhaps Ashley Battle from our scouting dept?) to development coach..

Or hire someone from the outside..

Cassell clearly wants a head coaching opportunity.

But that doesn't seem likely to be a this-season thing.

Agreed. Glad to have him elevated on the staff and back for next season, but need to be prepared to replace him too. Hopefully he doesn't get overlooked so often that he's no longer considered a candidate. He deserves a chance. He's put in his dues as an assistant, and was a smart and coachable player before that.

I saw Jeff Van Gundy coaching on the sideline of the clippers game. He was gesturing and pointing and yelling at players and it was pretty cool to see him back on the sidelines. I know the Cs didn’t want to elevate JVG over Cassell but it’s a bummer we had to lose him. He’s such a fun NBA personality.
