Dalano is averaging 16 ppg/5 reb/3 ast since leaving the Cs. 19 ppg in his last 10.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Dalano Banton this season off the bench for the Blazers has a 39 PER, lol. Nikola Jokic has a PER of 31.8 after seven games, lol
We dumped Banton for a top 55 protected second round pick, ie nothing, so we could open a roster spot to trade #41 for Jaden Springer. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Banton was not good here. Was ok on defense but fouled too much. And on offense he couldn't shoot from 3...he was good at slashing to the basket but struggled to finish at the basket which negated his ability to drive to the basket.
We took a flier on Banton..had him here for 2/3 of the season..but again, he was not good..and a guy who is not good and is not a fit on your team and is already age 24, why not move him and try someone else in that spot?
Springer is only 22. And he's been here for less than half a season (when adding the games he was with the team last season + this season). So we don't yet know how things well end up going with him. As of now it seems like he won't contribute much but that is going to be the case for most guys at the end of your bench..especially on a team as deep and talented as we are with our top 10 or so guys, there's very limited opportunity for end ofbench guys and most of them won't do much..
It's nice for Banton that he's doing well in Portland. Just like it's nice for Nesmith that he's going well in Indy. Neither of them was good in Boston. And neither of them would have gotten the opportunity or had the role on the Celtics to do what they are doing now in Portland/Indy.

It's in the past so doesn't matter, but if we're only giving Banton 3.5 months (middle of October to first week of February) to determine if he was good or not with us then fair is fair on Springer lol. He's got about another month before he's been with the team for that amount of regular season games as well (not including anything at all during playoffs either). Maybe he'll be good at his next stop like Banton has been in POR, and likely needs a similar situation. Much like Banton though if he's not going to look great in the small spots his gets and isn't likely to get more going forward let the little birdy fly free like we did with Banton. Sure Springer is a couple years younger, but both are in that group of "young enough to get better but still old enough to have been in the league for a few years and it hasn't happened yet" that to me make the 22 vs 24 different not as important as when it's comparing 2 years age difference in a draftee.

Great, we seem to be in agreement that Springer hasn't been here as long as Banton was

I'd also add that 2 years is 2 years. You might not think so, but to me it does make a difference. A lot of development can happen in 2 years. IMO a guy who is 22, a former 1st round pick who was the 13th ranked player in his class coming out of HS, former G league finals MVP, was our best player at Summer League, who the team traded assets to acquire and is making $4mil a year should also be given a bit more time to develop, prove himself and have at least a slightly longer leash than a 24 year old guy who was a mid 2nd round pick, was ranked 80th in his class coming out of HS by Rivals and ranked 92nd by 247Sports and was on a 1 year, non-guaranteed minimum contract and was just ok for us at Summer League..
Also, as I mentioned Banton was decent defensively for us but fouled too much..he couldn't shoot from deep..he could pressure the rim but was bad at finishing at the rim which negated his ability to pressure the rim. So overall he was not really a net positive on either end of the floor for us. Springer (even though he's 2 years younger and has been with the team for less time) imo has been a net positive on the defensive end so at least he has been good on one end of the floor.
My main point was that the Banton for Springer swap shouldn't be seen as a loss for us because even if Springer hasn't really worked out (yet), Banton didn't work out here either so it was essentially a wash..

Re: Appreciate You, Dalano Banton! Godspeed!
There was something there with Banton to tap into that the organization failed to bring out and they opted to try with Springer instead. Maybe there is something with Springer to tap into, maybe there isn't. If there isn't, they misevaluated. If there is, so far they've failed in bringing it out, but there is time left to continue to try.
So far, this looks like a miss by Stevens and the coaching staff. And if this is what their "misses" look like, I'll take it because no one is perfect and they've been hitting home run after home run at the top of the roster and even in other moves like this toward the bottom. It's ok to acknowledge when it looks like they've messed up and it's ok to not really care about small things not panning out.

Honestly we are better off long term giving any minutes that might have gone to Banton this season to Walsh. Glad he is doing well but let’s be honest, he likely doesn’t move the needle for the Cs and there isn’t / wasn’t really a path to keeping him around beyond this season.

We should also consider it's as much opportunity as it is player improvement. In fact, it'd be pretty easy to make the argument it's a lot opportunity. He still wouldn't slide into our top 9 and if you gave Walsh that kind of minutes and opportunity in POR he might be putting up those kind of stats as well. Possible Springer could be even...

Said it at the time of the trade, and I'll say it again, Banton was always going to work out eventually. He's just too big and too skilled. The question was when, not if, and whether a win-now Celtics team can tolerate that.
It does suck to lose a player who is an asset (and replace them with a one who is a liability) but the real question is whether he would have made this leap in Boston. I think not. He's a ball-dominant player by nature. He's not a shooter. You aren't going to take the ball out of anyone on this roster's hands to let Banton find his game.
Good for Dalano. The Celtics won the chip without him. Hopefully we stay healthy in the playoffs and don't need him this year either.
