The irony about Tony Allen

Post#1 » by chakdaddy » Sat Jan 26, 2008 2:42 am

This isn't even an average offensive team since the Pistons game...thanks to mostly decent defense we're still playing .500 ball since then, whee. Tonight is the worst game I've seen all year, against a team that is playing nearly as badly as their record.

The problems on offense are two: the utter disinclination to shoot anything but a jump shot, and the tendency to idly pass the ball to a defender, or just directly out of bounds.

Tony Allen is one of the only ones who will take it the hole, it seems, but whenever you put him in, for every time he takes it to the hole, he'll throw the ball away. You just have to hope the balance between aggressive play and utter, CRIMINAL carlessness with the ball goes in your favor; if not nail him to the bench.

Is it so hard to get Rondo to take it to the hole, and move around, or to remember that Kevin Garnett is a skilled offensive player who should look for his shot? All anyone does is stand around. I kind of think it starts with Rondo, but it should end with Garnett.

Weird title, the post sounds more like the promblems with our offense then anything Tony Allen related.

But yeah, our team set-up is one of the few were Tony can be really valuable.

He isn't much of a set up shooter, not much on off the ball rotator. And doesn't see the floor like a PG making others better.

But he's a great slasher and a black hole of a slasher. The ball goes in his hands, he goes to the hoop and we'll see what happens. In most other situations [say if we had Tim Duncan instead of KG] that would be a negative because he's black hole style would hurt us.

But with our team full of shooters and just Pierce as the only other option for easy baskets [penetrator] he's PERFECT. We need him to consistently go to the basket to wear out the other team's defense. Draw some fouls. And make it expensive for them to play zone or perimeter oriented D.

Actually, TA has improved this season as a playmaker. He has been penetrating and then dishing off pretty effectively. He can't dribble to save his life though.
