Tony Allen or Eddie House
These are 2 totally different players that add a lot to our team. Which of the 2 deserves the 1st backup shooting guard spot if we bring in a point guard.

Tony should become the full-time guy while Eddie get's used more as an offensive spark when the team is struggling to score or when they're trying to bust a zone or a packed defense.
This is especially true if that PG is Sam Cassell who brings a lot of the shooting prowess that you get with an Eddie House.

I don't think the question reflects reality.
The Celts are looking for a backup ball handler/point guard/defender in case Rajon Rondo goes down.
It seems to this puppy that there are no guarantees about playing time, and that said pickup/summer free agent signing will be behind Eddie House and Tony Allen in the rotation.
In other words, an insurance signing in case Rajon Rondo in not available.
House plays when Rondo is off the court typically. They are never paired. At times, it could be argued that Tony Allen is as much the point as Eddie.
Doc gauges if Eddie is on, and lets him fire up a few, for his shooting.
Tony is the best perimeter defender, who every now and then is out of it, but then is sometimes brilliant.
So, I think Tony and Eddie will keep their rotation spots.
Cassell may not get bought out, and I don't know if he'd be the Celts first choice this summer.
If Jason Williams got shipped by Miami to Memphis for Mike Miller,
Memphis might cut Williams loose, with Mike Conley, Jr., Kyle Lowry and Javaris Crittenton. But Miami would have to add a first round pick for that deal to happen, and since Miami already owes one first rounder to Minnesota for Ricky Davis and Mark Blount, I don't know if they would add a first rounder, and don't know if Memphis would want to wait that long to get it.
This summer, the Celtics options will be:
Sam Cassell - the guy will be 39 in October - doubt that the defense will still be there.
Beno Udrich - likely to go to the team with the biggest paycheck - not the Celts.
Jason Williams - a definate possibility, but he had a notorious fan taunting incident years back where he went nuts over an Asian fan taunting him in Golden State or Sacramento, and responded that the US should have nuked Vietnam or something close to that. Not sure if Danny and Doc would want that type of attitude, although he may have grown up and matured since then. But since he'll be 33 in November, he might accept the backup role behind House and Tony Allen in the rotation.
Tyrone Lue - a less effective Eddie House with better ball handling.
Chris Duhon - probably the next best possibility after Jason Williams. But, he's only 25, and has the same agent as Rajon Rondo. Don't know that he would accept being the 3rd point guard when he's started and been the a rotation player in Chicago. He'd want House's job, but I'm not sure he'd be better than House. House puts up a lot of points ( 8 ) at a great FG % in his 17 mpg.
Carlos Arroyo - probably will re-sign with Orlando, or go to Miami (who has announced they will look to sign a PG this summer).
Keyon Dooling - more of a combo guard than a true PG.
So although I'd like Duhon, it may turn out to be a choice between Jason Williams,Tyronn Lue and soon to be 39 Sammy "cheapshot" Cassell.

The PG addition would basically get time when:
1) Rondo is injured
2) Eddie House can't handle the position defensively or the team is applying too much defensive pressure for him to function.
If either of the above don't apply, I think that House will keep his spot in the rotation.
Tony Allen will keep his spot as the backup SG - he provides an obvious defensive stopper, penetrates and rebounds.

This is really difficult and I think that is why Ainge isn't that interested in bringing another guy that needs mins.
I went with Tony because he is shooting the ball well so that added to his defense and ability to get to the rim make him a more complete option. That said I don't know that Tony is shooting 44% from the 3 if he is jacking as many as Eddie is.
You are playing with yourself if you think Sam I Am shoots anywere near as well as Eddie. Stoudamire is pretty close to the shooter and adds better ball handling but is a complete victim on the defensive end. A backcourt with Sam and Eddie is going to killed defensively and a backcourt of Sam and Tony may not offer much perimter shooting.
It has to play out but my guess is that they are looking for a guy to play behind these two if something isn't working, not replace them and perhaps we see more of Pruitt in the second half of the season and they try and use him as an emergency ball handler.

It depends on the match up. House can't do the job on D-Wade that Tony can do, and Tony can't supply the consistent spark of scoring off the bench that House can -not yet anyways. It will be interesting how the guards are shuffled if Sam Cassell shows up. But I really don't think it's one or the other.

That's a very good point. Both will see minutes, it's just for Doc to have the right guy in the game.
