Cassell Hoping to Be Assistant Coach Next Season under Doc

Post#1 » by Jammer » Sun Mar 30, 2008 12:55 pm

Here is the link to an article that says Sam Cassell may have a clip board next season, as assistant coach under Doc Rivers, at least so Sam hopes.

I'd like to see what Sam could do with Tony Allen, sort of the way that Clifford Ray works with Leon Powe and Glen Davis.

Sam could always keep a pair of shorts around in case the Celtics needed to activate another guard.

And of course, assistant coaches get paid less than players.

Doc would be a great mentor, and Doc could then lay claim to Sam as his proteg

I think it was more of Sam saying he wants to coach. Like he has for the past 4 years.

Earlier this year I think he said he'd like to be an assistant to Geroge Karl

This would be a great move for Rondo and Pruitt to keep Sam here to teach these guys with Doc. We need to resign House as our veteran backup and shooter off the bench.

Maybe.

And maybe the reporter is doing the team a favor.

Leaving Sam an out.

Sam keeps talking about being Rondo's backup.

I expected him to be the 5th guard, which his Celtic play unequivocally justifies.

Sam has not earned any time over Eddie or Tony, and I strongly suspect that you will see a lot of both Eddie and Tony down the stretch.

I think Doc has quietly laid the ground work by announcing that he needs to get a lot of minutes for Tony down the stretch run.

Sam is known as loud, and not subtle, or the quiet type. These qualities are reasons why Sam would not be a good NBA head coach. Perhaps he can develop some sophistication, perhaps even political correctness, by being a team player and taking his assignments as they are given, and earned. Also, if Sam is the 5th guard, as I strongly suspect, and he doesn't behave like a good teammate, he won't be an assistant coach next year.

Sam can be notoriously loud on the bench, in the locker room, and at practice.

The beauty of Sam as the 5th guard is that, on days when everyone else is off
(Paul, Ray, Eddie, James, even Tony) Sam can just come in,
and launch 'em up, because things can't get any worse.

But, when everyone else is playing good, Sam's season 24% 3 PT. percentage means he should not be taking any 3 pointers, especially since Ray, Eddie, Paul and James are so good at it.

The worst thing about Sam is that whenever he is in, his unit gets lit up. Sam won one game (San Antonio), and other than that, has been a huge disappointment. He seems to have improved the spirits of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, though, which is important.

Sam also played very well in the Houston game. He kept us in the game in the 2nd quarter, when nobody else could score.

Sam was 1-6 for 2 points in the Houston game, plus 3 turnovers.

You must be thinking of Milwaukee (10 points) or Philadelphia (5 points).

Doc said he wanted to get Sam playing time down the stretch and needed to get Tony playing time.

I believe that's because they're both off and when on are the backups on this team.

Tony's had 14 good games this year.. all we need him to be one for is 8 of them [ECF,NBA Finals].

Sam on the other hand has already had good games with the clippers [didn't he score 30 points earlier this season?] and he's filled his role from the bench a couple times. Sam just needs to learn his teammates in a short amount of time... but we can't afford to have Rajon loose any rhytmn.

We hit a real stride in HOU and SA with this team [and without Ray Allen playing] the likes of wich we hadn't seen since the first 20 games. That's the kind of stride we need our team to hit come second round of the playoffs. I'm glad we're in the East, we get to take the first round in the playoffs as a test that we have a 90% chance of passing.

Sounds exactly like Avery Johnson. Dunno if he should be an assistant for us but he'd be worth someone taking a look at. And finding a good mentor from one of his ex-coaches would help him along.
