This excerpt is obviously speaking speculatively. Still, he would be an ideal addition to a Celtics bench that really lacks height on defense. Definitely, a younger replacement to an older PJ Brown. I wonder who Ainge would deem expendable in order to consummate a trade with Cleveland. Would Cleveland even think of moving Varejao considering what they'd went through prior to this season over a contract dispute and the eventual matching of an offer sheet by Charlotte.

When Varejao came back, Wallace was the starter and was getting more clutch-time minutes. Varejao responded by trying to force his offensive game, which turned into a disaster. His shooting percentage plummeted, and his turnovers increased. By the end of the season, Varejao was just plain frustrated and not at all happy, and he made it known. Though he's still valuable, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Cavs test the trade market for Varejao this summer. Akron Beacon Journal

IMO, despite the hype, Varejao has virtually no game.

A guy who isn`t a good offensive player will never be appreciated much by the average fan. Cause the average fan doesn`t notice the defense, the good screen, the block-out, the little things he brings to the table...Varejao is like that. And Perk on our team.

I like AV he would be a nice big to have coming off the bench bringing energy, hustle and defense. But I don`t really see who we could get him. CLE likes the guy so if he is traded I expect it will be in a package for a very good player.

AV would be a very good addition to the Celts. He will be playing to get a new contract so Boston would get his best and if he doesn't play well his contract is reasonable even if he picks up his option. If he plays to his potential you get him for one year and can decide if you want to sign him as a free agent in the future. With the Celts payroll as it is now I really don't see that happening.

Looking at Boston's roster I don't see any trade possibility that makes sense though. Boston already has Big Baby and Powe who both have already done a good job for the Celts in a similar role. The Celts will probably look for size elsewhere.

This is a little off topic in this thread, but the idea of what the Celts need in order to improve made me think of this. The Celtics are in an odd place right now. They are the class of the East and probably will be for a couple more years, but I don't see them winning a championship with the West being as strong as it is with the Lakers, Spurs, Hornets... Of course the Celts have the potential to beat anyone, but IMO they still aren't good enough to win a ring.

I like AV a lot BUT.......

#1: for what he would cost us -- both in terms of $$ and trade value -- there are guys we could get who would be a better fit.

#2: other teams need him a lot more than we do, and hence will offer far more. For us, AV would be a luxury. But there are teams out there absolutely desparate for a guy like AV who will bid his value way out of our range (if he's actually available to begin with).

Patrick O'Bryant is a guy I want the Cavs to bring into their summer league and training camp. He could also be a good fit with the Celts.

Another guy I like for the Cavs is Randolph Morris of the Knicks. I think that guy has a lot of talent, but he's restricted. I think he could be a good fit in Boston also, but he's much more unlikely than O'Bryant.

I'd take AV in a second if he'd accept Pollard's money, which very unlikely he would.

That's why I expect Ainge to somehow acquire Robin Lopez in draft day if he fell into the late 1st round. I could picture Lopez to be the taller version of AV in a year or two :nod:

Sadly, Varejo doesn't even do that well. The only thing that clown has going for him is his height and carrot-top haircut. Clown boy shot 35% from the field and 33% from the free throw line (ALL WIDE OPEN LOOKS/DUNKS EVEN) during the playoffs and averaged 0.1 blocks.

I promise you, if that guy had a mop cut nobody would even know who he is. :banghead:

I don't what white guys on the Celtics if they can't shoot the lights out... Who wants a guy with no athleticism and no tecnique on their team? Stop the crappy offensive big man streak, I want another big man that can hit the f***ing shot near the basket... We are reling on PJ, PJ that is notoriously a DEFINSIVE BIG MAN, for some points 5 ft away from the basket... :nonono:

Doc and Danny have the same mode of thinkings as Dumars does - they prefer to have 5 guys on the court that are offensive threats. I don't see AV fitting here for that reason.

Well, Rondo and Perk in the starting 5 don`t really support that claim. And DET had Ben in the middle for years...

A.V. would be good for our second unit. Teams like Atlanta are taller and more athletic than us and Powe and Davis are just too short. They give great effort, but we need more height. I agree we need a big that can score, but they are few and far between for what we have to offer.

AV would be a great addition to this team, but he's the kind of player a team with championship aspirations needs. He doesn't have much of an offensive game, but he plays very good D, quick enough to stay with quicker bigs, gets steals, can handle the ball pretty well, can pass, etc. Basically, he does everything you need in a basketball game, except shoot. Which is why a lot of casual fans have no idea why he is valuable and why he was able to hold out and get a contract from the management.

Unfortunately, the Cavs also realize this and will never trade him to the Celtics for the garbage we can offer.

i really like verajao off the bench. we wont get him though. he'd demand the mid level, and baby/powe give us much more value/upside.
