Red wasn't a great basketball Svengali - Red got lucky. The Royals didn't want to meet Russell's salary demands, so they passed him up in the draft. St. Louis then drafted Russell and traded him to the Celtics for "Easy" Ed McCauley, who was a hometown hero and 6 time All-Star.

It was just like Jerry Krausse - had Portland drafted Michael Jordan instead of Sam Bowie, Krausse would've been a nobody.

If Rochester had drafted Russell, Boston likely would have won no titles in the 50s and 60s.

Phil Jackson can't be too bad of a coach if he has presided over 2 dynasties with Jordan and Shaq as his best players, and soon to be a 3rd dynasty with Kobe as his best player. Just saying. ;)

Red was a way better coach!!! Red did it all for the Celtics. Its mind boggling what Red did!!! He was the sole coach and general manager. Yet he got his teams to play incredibly smart team basketball. His teams were so prepared for everything that nothing the opposing team did ever surprised them. They could respond to other teams adjustments on the fly, because Red had prepared them for everything. Everyone of Red's players had a high BBIQ because Red taught them.

Red was a BB mastermind.
1. Red was an innovator on offense and defense! Who introduced the Fastbreak to the NBA?

2. Red was a motivator! His players always played with intensity. They all seem to still have a deep respect for Red!

3. Red's teams won big time all the time!

jackson is a good coach but his assistants should get more credit. jackson biggest accomplishment is getting headcases like kobe to play with his teammates better and adopting his assistants offensive ideas. I think P. Riley is a better coach than jackson.

Red is in a league of his own!!! The NBA is what it is today in part because of RED!!!

sincerely, Vincenzo

Where are you guys getting all thius anger and hate, who the heck says Phil is so much better than Red? I think all this is for nothing. Red is legend and Phil is an hall of fame coach. I'd say Red>Phil. Who cares, calm down. Pointless argument.
