yeah cause southie is greeeeat, right?
Having lived in Boston and now in LA, I can tell you that Southie is not the right comparison.
You can talk about Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury if you want, but LA absolutely is far scarier and more dangerous. Believe me, I ran a business in the heart of Dorchester for years.
Even the nice areas are ruined by the thugs, like how they cancelled the Santa Monica fireworks last year because the previous year a bunch of thugs caused a bunch of trouble. Sweet.
And the air quality is disgusting. However, the lack of snow and cold is pretty sweet. Too bad half the time I have to enjoy it around a bunch of Laker-fan douchebags.

I've lived in both cities too:
Things I like about LA
1. Weather
2. Girls
3. Diversity (of food, people, etc.)
Things I like about Boston
1. The T
2. Girls
3. Clean Air
In the end though, Boston is just too minority-unfriendly.

is that a reason(im not singleing out boston here) that a lot of people ultimately hate l.a.? is it the whole melting pot? a subtle undercurrent of fear or racism of unknown peoples?
in alot of metro cities races and whatnot have their places, their corners of the city, if you will. for good and bad l.a. all sort of ends of up being this huge interwoven quilt of everything and everyone...like i said there is pro and cons...

Diversity sure makes things unsafe, at it's inextricably linked with socio-economic class and, as studies have made certain, crime is highly correlated with low income society.
But that's not to say that Diversity doesn't have good externalities as well, culture being one of them.
Things tend to get worse before they get better, and diversity is definitely one of those.
And since this is a board about the NBA, nothing is better than being part of an ethnically diverse fanbase, where you can cheer on your favorite team with people of all sorts of incomes and ethnicities that you might normally fear or be biased against on a day-to-day basis, but for one ideal you can come together and be unified.
And that's something that makes me very, very proud of as a Lakers fan.

well that is what ive always dug about living here all my life...
you watch a movie like the departed, and i know its a movie, but it is based on a real boston gangster/thug, and it seems much more segregated...puerto ricans over here, irish everywhere, i am generalizing i know, but still is that part of the trepidation people have in regards to l.a.?
