All-time team in attendance

Post#1 » by Fencer reregistered » Fri Jun 6, 2008 5:26 am

As the announcers pointed out, one could assemble quite the all-time team from the men in attendance tonight.

Hall of Famers definitely there included:

Russell, Jabbar, Erving, Hondo, Magic

That's an amazing starting line-up right there.

Hall of Famers there in highest likelihood (I didn't watch all the intros and so on -- I had something else going on too and even missed a few minutes of the game) included:

Chief, Tommy, Cousy, White

Were West or Walton there? Who else am I missing from the legends?

Perennial All-Star modern players there included:

KG, Kobe, Pierce, Allen

Lesser All-Stars attending (none of whom I think would make a team of 12) included:

Ainge, Rivers, Gasol

Who am I missing?

And could the resulting all-time team beat the team of guys who weren't there?

Interesting question, but doubtful.

Off the top of my head:

Wilt/Shaq/Hakeem
Duncan/Malone/McHale
Bird/Lebron/Pippen
MJ/Drexler/Iverson
Oscar/Stockton/Isiah

I assume Jerry West was at the game, so I left him off my team.

Guys who were there: Better at the 1 and 5.
Guys who weren't there: Better at the 2, 3, and 4.

HOWEVER, guys who were 5s in real life might well make better 4s than guys who've played the 4. E.g., Jabbar/Russell at the 5/4 beats Wilt/Duncan or whoever you think the best combo of another pure 5 and another pure 4 is. Wilt/Dream is probably the best 5/4 of the guys who weren't there.

And Kobe/Magic/West (all Lakers :: sigh :: ) is probably a better guard rotation than MJ/Big O/whoever/whoever.

Bird/(Baylor, Worthy, Pippen) is better at the 3 than Erving/Hondo/Pierce, however.
