OT:Jamel Thomas

Post#1 » by hiphop1 » Sat Aug 23, 2008 9:43 pm

Saw "Through the Fire" on ESPN Classic for like the 80th time, and was wondering why Jamel did not get drafted? He was projected in the lottery, and his game was tight. I just realized he played for us for three games. Anyone every seen any of his college games? He was damn good. Wonder why he just couldnt get it?

Oh he gets it. He got the right idea, stay in greece, playing basketball, getting treated like a king. Too bad so many others are catching on, it might be a little crowded over there soon.

Jamel Thomas is too small, too slow, and too related to Sebastian Telfair and Stephon Marbury.

Jamel was never a lottery pick though he was expected to go in the 2nd round. He was a really good college player but he had a classic Big East tweener game. He had the body to bang down low and enough perimeter skill to break down the defense but he lacked the size to play up front in the NBA and the foot speed to play in the backcourt. He was always a favorite of mine at P.C. but watching him play for Boston,m as smart a player as he was, he just couldn't keep up changing ends.

Jamel was a pretty physical player, but didn't have the handle to play shooting guard in the NBA. He led the Big East in scoring his senior year (often being double and triple teamed), but his development was stunted in his final two years at Providence as he was forced to play out of position after Pete Gillen left Tim Welsh with no one above 6'7 on the roster. He was often playing the 4 alongside another small forward (Erron Maxey) at the 5.

He was a terrific all-around scorer who could shoot from deep and jump through the roof. If you're interested in seeing him play you can find Providence vs Duke and PC vs Arizona during their elite 8 run during Jamel's sophomore year. He hit a huge game-tying 3 in the final seconds against Arizona on a Providence team that had more talent than their record showed (Shamgod, Croshere, Thomas and Ruben Garces all saw time in the NBA).

He was a good scorer, but not so good that his defensive shortcomings and lack of handle could be overlooked.
