Miles is interesting. It probably all comes down to what his playing weight ends up at. If he's anywhere near the 265 that's been mentioned or even at 250, he's going to play PF in a Lamar Odom role. If he gets down to 240 or so he will be fine at SF. Fortunately, we are stacked at both positions.
If Miles can contribute, the obvious result is that someone else becomes tradeable. First in line would be TA due to salary. Moving TA and Scal, plus possibly BBD (again due to his expiring contract) might bring that mid-thirties quality backup center.

Wait whoah, Miles is/was 265? Dude was as thin as a rail a year and a half ago. Did he really gain that much?..If he's anywhere near 265 keep him in the post at the 4 when we go small with KG at the 5. His primary position is the 3 though, regardless if he can shoot or not. There are a ton of 3's who can't shoot in this league, but they make up for it with hustle, defense and rebounding (see Gerald Wallace). That's what I'm expecting from Miles at the very least.

TA, Scal, and BBD do seem like the likeliest tradebait--- not that they'd attract much interest aside from Baby's potential and maybe a little from Tony. But yeah, I could see that scenario in a deal sometime this year if the team ends up needing more reliable frontcourt help or an experienced backup PG. Pruitt could be in the mix too in the latter case.
Giddens is intruiging because he may be able to step in and eclipse Tony somewhere into the season. His shooting and passing may already be better. TA will probably be back closer to his old form this year, but if Walker or Giddens show signs early on, Tony could be the odd man out.

I think the most likely canidates to be traded Glen Davis, Brian Scalibrine and possibly JR Giddens in the right deal.
I put JR Giddens on that list because he is doesn't have an awful lot of upside but if he comes in and has a nice start to his rookie year then I believe Danny Ainge might be willing to package him with Glen Davis to get a team to take on Brian Scalibrine to get some more cap flexability.

i actually dont see anybody getting traded. and why would danny trade anybody he has now. he has no reason to. most of the young guys he he has have limited value around the league. theyre worth more to us than they are to other teams. it would be foolish of danny to trade ANYONE this season because he wouldnt get anything of value back.
giddens i dont expect to be going anywhere anytime soon. one thing theyve consistently said about this kid is that they love his athleticism and his ability to be a playmaker at both ends. hes much like rondo in that way. he plays bigger than his size much like rondo due to his long arms. hes got quick feet and hands also like rondo. if he can impact a game on d anything like the way rondo does danny would need his head examined to get rid of this kid. cap flexibility is nowhere near the issue being suggested. wyc has shown that he will pay for a winner. we stand to have 20mil fall off our cap in 2 years possibly. winning is the issue for this team, not cap flexibility.

The only trade that would make sense is one to pick up a solid vet that another team is unloading during the season (like the Gasol trade but that's too optimistic). You need salary, expirings, and potential. TA and Scal are the salary - TA and BBD are expirings - BBD is potential. These 3 each meet 2 out of 3. Powe could replace BBD but I feel he's not going anywhere. Unfortunately we are a little thin on the tradeable salary number.

Re: Where our roster stands now. . .
man, are we stacked at the backup 2s & 3s (and bigs too for that matter)
TA
Giddens
BillWalk
even Eddie (and Pruitt can play the mini 2?)
Miles can too (and the 4)
Eddie: 1/2
Pruitt: 1/2?
TA: 2/3/1?
Giddens: 2/3
Walker: 2/3
Miles: 3/4
Powe: 4/5
BBD: 4/5
POB: 5/4
so many guys, so little minutes. i wonder if ray2 is going to play +/- 34mpg (or less?) as opposed to leading the team in min like last yr?

Not that Ray doesn't keep his body in excellent shape cuz he does. If you saw that man in practice during the Finals there's a picture of him with his shirt off and he's friggin ripped. It's ridiculous. That said I'd hope to rest his surgically repaired ankles a bit more this season and keep him fresh. This is where Pruitt, Giddens and Tony can come in and help out a lot during the regular season. If we can knock 5 minutes off his per game numbers we can keep him going strong for quite a while when you consider how well he prepares himself with him almost OCD-like routines. In the right environment, Ray could conceivably play to 38-39 and be EFFECTIVE the whole time.
And as Bill said earlier(truthfully I couldn't say it any better than that if I tried) now is exactly the time you wanna bring in young guys when when you'll be able to better guide their development next to Hall of Famers and similar young players with newfound credibility. Now they can say "Listen to these guys cuz we did and we're now better players for it and we won it all last year". That's the credibility kids like Perk, Powe, and Rondo have now.

I wouldnt mind seeing Ray get something like 30 - 34 minutes. Give the remaining minutes to either TA or Giddens. Speaking of JR, does anyone think he can play the 3? I was thinking he was strictly a 2 but Ive seen some people here list him as being a a guy who can play the sf spot. I guess if Tony could play some spot minutes at the 3 JR would be able to also... I also would like to see this lineup at the very least in pre season for a few minute stretch. Rondo/Giddens/Miles/KG/O'Bryant. Has the makings of a defensive nightmare for opposing teams.

I don't see why not...I actually expect him to be our backup 3 right now. Miles has a 50-50 shot at best at making the team IMO. Giddens averaged almost 9 boards a game in college, has a long wingspan and is very athletic. He is the 2nd wing off the bench behind TA right now unless Walker beats him out for it.

Re: Where our roster stands now. . .
I'm happy with the way Danny handled the off season even it doen't toatlly work out. I don't want to do what Detroit did when they won which was overpay for their vets, play them insane minutes while going all out during the regular season and fizzling in the playoffs, all the whie touting their youngsters but not playing them and watching their trade value drop, actually paying some of those young guys on potential, and all around blowing a pretty good salary situation. I'd rather take the chance we are taking now, rather than locking into Posey and be stuck with him if he loses it. At least now I think we have a degree of flexibility should something go wrong during the season.

Re: Where our roster stands now. . .
Portland fan here... not really sure what to expect from Miles this season. From what we've heard, his knee is toast so we really don't think he'll do much. Reading through this thread, it seems some people think he's a SF while others think he's a PF. Prior to his knee injury 2 years ago, he actually was developing a nice game. He improved his shot out to 15'-18' consistently. He could handle the ball well (point SF). He drove to the basket quite well. Depending on what his knee is capable of now, and I think someone else nailed it on the head about his weight (yeah, he did put on a lot of weight, but that was a while back so I would think he's dropped a lot of it by now), I'm not really sure where he will be best suited for. Of course, I think (and secretly hope) that he won't make the final roster. If he does, then good luck to him and Boston.
