I watched them both and the guy really seems to have gotten a bad rap. He's so laid back that I don't see how he could become a team cancer, or ruin a team's chemistry. He seems to enjoy basketball, like to joke around, and he doesn't take himself too seriously(for an NBA player.) In the recent SI article, he says that he doesn't understand how he got labeled as a bad person, and it's pretty clear that he probably shouldn't have been.
I also found this
video which has footage of him practicing from this past season and a short interview. I don't think the Blazers had him practice more than once or twice, which is strange, since he doesn't seem to have suffered a career ending injury in the video. They definitely didn't want him to even have a shot last year, and were looking for the insurance bailout.
I can show you 3 youtube videos of Hitler kissing babies, being polite and demonstrating great charisma. Okay so that is a very bad joke. Regardless, I personally never thought Miles was a bad guy - heck I have never met him! But, to me his biggest knock is his lack of heart and commitment to the game.
Let me say two things:
1. Paul Allen of the Portland Trail Blazers took this kid in and paid him a ton of money when the Cavs and Clips left him for dead - due to their own issues with Miles. No matter what you think or say about Paul Allen and the Blazers, they gave him his THIRD shot to prove he was better than he had demonstrated and had been labeled in the past. Prior to the injury, he fought with coaches, and demonstrated a lack of commitment to work hard with the team. After the injury, instead of working VERY hard to make it a success like Zach Randolp, Amare Stoudamire and now Greg Oden; Darius ballooned up - again showing his lack of commitment.
2. An INDEPENDENT doctor hired by the league and players union concluded his knee was bone and bone and that his next injury would result in knee replacement surgery.
Many people close to him in Portland have said the same thing about Darius. He doesnt love playing in the NBA. He loves being a player in the NBA. He loves the lifestyle of being a player.
Maybe 4 chances is what he needs. I can't say I feel sorry for the guy. He has made millions of dollars on talent alone. If he had worked hard like a KG, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, or Kobe Bryant, then maybe he would have become a top player in the league.
My bet is that the doctor is accurate and the knee will not hold up through the rigors of training camp, pre season, and a full nba season.
Good luck next year.
LOVED the Laker arse kicking.
