Who is going to be the odd man out?

Post#1 » by Havlicek17 » Sun Sep 28, 2008 3:13 pm

Danny Ainge was quoted in the Globe today as saying:

The Celtics have 16 players on their training camp roster and no more will be added, general manager Danny Ainge said. Sam Cassell and newcomer Darius Miles do not have guaranteed contracts. Even so, the Celtics might waive another player with a low contract or make a trade to accommodate both Cassell and Miles (the roster limit is 15). "We've got a month to find out," Ainge said . . .

Who is going to be odd man out?

Some thoughts...

Beacuse we will be 4 deap at PG at the start of camp, I expect the decision of who to cut or move will come out of the PG competition. Do we move Pruitt to make room for Sam? Do we drop Sam in favor of starting his coaching career a year earlier? Do we package Pruitt and another player for a 2 for 1 trade?

Hopefully we just cut Sam.

I think there are a few scenarios possible and Danny probably doesn't know how it's going to turn out right now.

1. We make a 2-1 trade.
2. Darius Miles doesn't pan out and he gets cut.
3. Pruitt is a disappointment and we trade him for a 2nd rounder or cut him.
4. Scenarios 1-3 don't happen so we cut Cassell and make him an assistant coach with the understanding that we may sign him as a player later in the year if needed.

Number 4 sounds like a good plan.

I hadn't heard any official word on even signing Cassell yet, I'm glad that it's non guaranteed. I think Pruitt is most likely to be gone, maybe a trade is done, but like last year we don't have a lot of trading options.

The story is yet to be written. Everyone will have a chance to prove himself in October. May the worst man lose.

1. Gabe Pruitt gets traded for cash or a second round pick to a team with a trade exception (like Oklahoma City, Minnesota or Chicago);

or Gabe Pruitt is included in a 3 way to a team
like Washington, the Nets, the Clippers or Golden State
where the team receiving Pruitt sends a small forward to Memphis,
who is under the cap
(while Memphis sends the Celtics a 2nd round pick or cash (Good Luck on the cash))

or Gabe is in a 2 for 1, like
Brian Scalabrine + Pruitt + 2009 2nd round pick to Oklahoma City for Joe Smith (works),
reducing OKC's payroll by $800,000 this year,
removing someone who did not want to end up there in the first place,
and providing players with a good work ethic who will accept their roles as
insurance point guard and insurance/spread the floor/mobile power forward
role models for the young OKC team.

2. If the Celtics know that they are getting Mutombo or Mourning,
they may move Glen Davis for a 2nd round pick or cash,
because Davis can be traded
TO ANY TEAM WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE A PLAYER BACK; say Dallas, Denver or Miami.

3. Sam doesn't make it out of camp, but gets a green sport coat to wear on the sidelines.

4. Depending on what Bill Walker has shown so far,
and what J. R. Giddens has shown;
Walker might get moved to a team in need of a small forward, like Memphis,
who is under the cap and could accept Walker in exchange for a pick or cash.

Here is my best speculation. If Tony Allen hurts his knee again, AInge would have had it with him. It goes same with Scalabrine with any kind of injury.

Do we know if TA's deal has any injury insurance for us? As in, (just an example..) if he can't play for more then 1/2 the season - the deal can be terminated...?

The one position on this team that is totally bloated is PF. Any trades will come from this position though I doubt there will be a trade. My guess is that Boston cuts Scalabrine.

I don't think Sam has to play 20 mpg but this team has a need for a veteran pg. If he doesn't make the team we will be in search for a player like him all season.

There are no special circumstances on Tony's contract, why would there be it is a 2 year 5 mil deal?

Sam Cassell retires and joins the coaching staff as an assistant. He then continues to practice with the team and comes aboard later in season if and when we need a veteran PG to backup Rondo.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

If we don't do a trade, given how poorly Sam played last year, I am hoping for his early retirement and addition to the coaching staff. If someone goes down during the season, then he could be reinstated and play for the remainder of the year.

Considering that "Trader Danny" and is always looking for a way to improve this team, I don't think a trade for a solid backup Center is out of the question. But I think he's ready to roll with Perk, BOD, and BBD, and will only pull the trigger if the right opportunity presents itself.

All I know is that we better not cut a big! We need BBD, LP and Scal! These players know the system and know what it takes to win a ring in this league. SIgning POB is a ins policy like Pollars so he is safe. I remember reading an article where players and the staff raved on how hard BWalker is practicing this summer so if he keeps it up he is good. Giddens was chosen over a couple of players that have a chance to be big like MArio Chalmers ( KU point) CDR, BWalker just to name a few. DMiles also had staff and players jocking how good he looks and he has potential to be that player the Clippers wanted when they took him 3rd.
So with that said that leaves Pruitt and Cassel as options to be cut. Pruitt is young and has an offensive game that can work in the NBA a combo gaurd that can score and pass. Kids jump shot is sweet. I remember watching those USC games with him and the other guy that plays with Washignton, and this kid put a lot of smaller points to bed with his D and his jumper plus he is real young and has crazy upside. Plus DA and Doc were quoted saying how good he looked early in the summer. Hopefully its just not talk.
So that leaves good OLD Sam I Am. he was a good point in this league for a while but last year was propbally the end of that. He showed he could still ball like when we played ATL at the end of the season and he pissed on them for 20 in the second half but if you remember the playoffs he **** sucked. So Sam in my eyes is the odd man out.
What I think is happening this that Doc and DA want to add some compition to the point gaurds in Boston. I think they want EH and GPruitt to think to themselves they got to ball hard or they gone or get no mins. So this is just a motivation tool Nothing but smoke and screens.

i have a gut feeling that baby and pruitt will be shipped out in a 2 for 1 for a cheap, but tall, veteran PF backup.

with eddie for the next 2 years, and cassell this year as 3rd backup, pruitt is pretty useless. but he is still pretty highly regarded around the league and one of our few expendable bargaining chips.

I still don't get why we're signing cassell but since he doesn't have a guaranteed contract I guess there's no harm. I think Pruitt will have a good camp and frankly I would like to see him get minutes this year but if Cassell sticks there's no minutes for pruitt so maybe you move him along with someone else and try to pick up another shooter or a big man. Eddie makes the team no question so it's cassell, tony and Pruitt in a battle for 2 guards spots. If Miles has anything left you have to keep him over cassell because of his length and shot blocking ability
"Now, there's a steal by Bird..!"
