Bill Walker is a VERY smart kid

Post#1 » by Bruiser » Sun Oct 12, 2008 6:47 am

Hey yo!

I'm very impressed with Bill so far. First he joined the camp as soon as he could. Then he fixed his contract by his own. Last night as a 21 year old rookie he managed to get under a so-called superstar's skin as he really turned TMac mad.

Competitive, smart, hard worker. An awesome athlete with brains? Sounds soooo sweet to me.....

Any thoughts?

Kind regards.

Yo...if I didn't love Rondo (my man crush ) so much, Walker would be my favorite player. The last time I was this excited for a prospect was the thought of what Gerald Green could become, but Billy has an actual game to back up his talent. When we didn't draft him with the 30th pick, I threw my clicker at the wall...then we acquired him with $$ and I was filled with glee.

I predict that he's out starting 3 guard when Ray's done and he'll be a vital piece in the rotation this year, like Davis was last year.

Yes, he's a smart kid, gets under players' skin, VC-type dunks, says great stuff in interview, just needs a consistent J, and all that.

But--- he almost fouled out in 6 minutes last night. Refs are going to give him rookie calls all season long, too, so I'm not anointing him steal of the decade status yet. Like SonicYouth34 and others, I did jump out of my chair when the Celtics traded for him in the second round. I felt he belonged here. So I do now refer to him as Sir William, Air apparent!

I'd get under T-Mac's skin too if I bumped into his often injured knee. It's nice to see some youthful, unbridled competitiveness with wicked athleticism on the c's again. We haven't had anyone like this since Ricky D.

so far he's like Kedrick Brown with an anger issue.

Hopefully he develops everything except for Dunking. He has that one down.. aside from dunking though I can't really see where his roleplaying skills are. Instigator is nice.

...you gotta learn how to watch off-ball movement on offense/defense better bro...Kedrick and Bill have almost nothing in common in terms of court presence...

Kedrick was a pretty good defender. On offense though he mostly just drifted out to the three point line and waited around. Kedrick is just the reference that most people remember. How about Blue Edwards as a comparison? I think his build was pretty similiar to Bill Walkers had he had good hops and would aggressively finish around the hoop.

Whoa, I'd almost forgotten about the Blue Edwards era in Boston. Wasn't that during (or slightly after) the Todd Day era? I don't really remember anything about his early career except his leaping ability, but I'd say Walker seems a good deal more motivated than Edwards. I was actually thinking about a young Latrell Spreewell...

Anyhow, there seems to be a general trend among comparing current rookies to ones that didn't make it in the past as a sort of cautionary tale. Athletic shooting guards get compared to Kedrick Brown, athletic small forwards with considerable hype draw comparisons with Gerald Green, and rugged bangers are lumped in with Brandon Hunter. You could even throw the dimbulb from my sig in there to compare to centers, although Stonehands wasn't really a young prospect by the time he stopped giving a toss.

Todd Day? He was too awful to really count.. I hated that guy. Part of that is we traded Sherm Douglas for him. If people think I don't like Delonte West - I friggin LOVE West compared to Todd Day.

That team had Nique, Sherm Douglas, Dino Radja, X-man.. Granted alot of those guys were past their prime. But they did have some talent. Sherm IMHO was a heck of PG. I'd say its been Sherm then Rondo in terms of decent PGs.

I wouldn't diss Blue. He had a respectable career. One thing that annoys me about boards is every guy is pegged to be a star or a bust. Some guys do have just okay careers. If Bill Walker ends up like Blue Edwards its not the end of the world. Blue had a career scoring average of 10.8. Sure it's not HOF material but he would be a rotation guy on our team. Maybe Bill Walker can do the same this year.

Pete
