My understanding is Durant looked very good in workouts, so I'm not sure whether Oden would have been chosen. Portland should not have had Oden in the first place so I don't feel too bad for the team, but Oden is one of my favorite players so I'd like to see him win a Championship or two. I feel bad for him in this case.

Don't get me wrong, I like the guy personally. I think he has great character and is a very likeable person in itself, but I would have been REALLY angry if we would have drafted him, labeled the next Bill Russell and he failed to stay on the floor. I know its only an ankle sprain...last night. Last year he hurt himself getting off of his sofa at home for gods sake! Some athletes are just injury prone. I can list quite a few who never lived up to the hype because they couldn't stay healthy long enough to matter. Unfortunately I see Greg slowly slipping into this category. ...

I have to admit I tend to get the same impression. He just seems vulnerable. While a guy like Rondo seems to be undestructable (even being over 100 pounds lighter), Oden gives me scares with every step he takes. Bill Walton was already named, I have another (recent) example: Shaun Livingston. Livingston's body is not strong enough for the NBA. I am concerned that might be the case for Oden as well.

I think Oden must have a pituitary condition or something...he's huge, he looks WAY older than 19 (the guy looks 39!) and he's fragile...all things pointing to a hormone imbalance or something...

If we had drafted Oden or Durant we would have traded him and Ratliff straight up for KG. We could have fielded a starting 5 of Rondo, Wally, Pierce, Perkins and Garnett with Jefferson, TA, West, and Powe off the bench. Further trades to bring in veterans could have been made. Al Jefferson may have brought us Gasol for example.

I am happy with the way things worked out. But with Oden or Durant we would have been loaded last year and still would have traded for Garnett.

This thread has to be a joke. He rolled his ankle, how many times have members of our team done that? Stop being bitter that we didn't get him. Sure, things definately worked out for the best, but stop being delusional about Oden. He will be great.

Who is being bitter? There's no guarantee we'd even made the Finals with Oden instead of Ray and KG...no one here wants to trade what we have for "what if", ergo STFU please

stfu and learn to read. I never said anything about trading our guys for a "what if." But to label Oden a "walking injury" because of one serious wrist injury and a couple freak accidents is just stupidity. Most of you guys are saying thank god we didn't draft this guy, he's gonna be a bust/chronic injury problem. And you're basing your opinion on the FIRST game of his career.

Based on Danny's comments after the ping pong balls fell where they did, I think we would have picked Durant over Oden. But it doesn't matter, we never got the chance.

I don't think we could've gotten KG if we had the 1st or 2nd pick because I don't think KG would've acccepted the trade. Lots of young talent is great, but not if you are trying to win a championship in the final years of your career. Instead, the likely scenario for the Celts would have been to trade Paul and go 100% youth movement.

Imagine what young talent and/or picks we could've gotten for Paul in addition to Durant/Oden, Big AL, Rondo, D West, etc. It would've been an interesting group to watch develop and grow up, but I prefer a here and now championship team over a future promise "maybe" of one.

Here's to hoping that Oden comes back and stays healthy while we win #18!

YOU said we were bitter, not me. And *I* didn't call him a walking **** injury, again, so misplaced anger there. And no offense, but if a guy who is 19 **** YEARS OLD is getting hurt that easily and frequently, it's troubling...I was damn near indestructible at that age, as are most guys, so to be hurt that easily and often is troubling (see: Sam Bowie, Ralph Sampson, Bill Walton, etc)

Danny was once asked if in retrospect he was glad he didn't win the lottery. His answer was typical Danny. He said having the rights to Oden or Durant would have increased the value of the team as opposed to the rights to Green and he would rather have had the #1 pick than #5 even with hindsight. Clearly, he pulled off a coup and acheive ultimate success with pick #5. But our bench is still thin and we are not odds on favorite to repeat.

Had we drafted Oden or Durant Danny may have committed to rebuilding and maybe we are Portland right now instead of champs. However, if he decided to go after Garnett and Allen with #1 pick and Jefferson and Ratliff contract in hand he could have accumulated more talent and built an even stronger team and probably held on to Minnesota's #1 pick as well which is likely to be top 10.

You really think someone born in an American hospital to American parents somehow has a forged birth certificate?

As if his mother knew upon conception that he was destined for the NBA, and decided to forge his birth certificate to give him a leg up.

You mean like Barack Obama?  (and before anyone throws a fit, they *STILL* have not produced the official birth certificate...I'm just sayin')

Dude, it was a joke...people have been kidding about it since he was at OSU cos he looks way older than 19. I still think he has a pituitary imbalance or something.

I don't take pleasure in this happening, but it's pretty damn ironic when you consider how badly Portland wanted Darius Miles to be physically incapable of playing on our team. I remember a thread a couple of weeks back where a bunch of their posters joined in on our thread and openly hoped he'd get injured...someone here mentioned they were setting themselves up for some bad karma down the road.

Then again, a good chunk of them thought we only tried out Miles to "get back" at them for the Ratliff/Roy deal, which would be funny if it weren't so pathetically paranoid.
