How good would this team have been?

Post#1 » by Celtsfan1980 » Tue Nov 4, 2008 4:05 pm

Starters:Rondo, Roy, Pierce, Jefferson, Perkins.
Key reserves:Powe, Gomes, West, Wally, T. Allen.
Ainge has said he would have drafted Rondo, but obviously only he knows whether he's telling the truth. Let's assume he drafted Roy and still was able to trade for Rondo. Jefferson would get more recognition with success, so you'd have 3 potential all stars on that team. It'd be the first time since the early-1990's where Boston has had that kind of potential. They would also have Wally's expiring contract and Lafrentz' as well. From what I've read, they were 9-7 with both Pierce and Jefferson starting in the 2006-2007 season. Therefore, I think it would be the best team Pierce has played for and capable of 50 wins. What do you think?

It would be a good team but not a championship contender that's for sure.

They'd have 20 million in expirings though. If they were able to get the number 1 draft pick in the lottery, there's a chance they would have had Garnett still. Jefferson is much better defensively at the 4 than he is at the 5. If they had Garnett, what do you do regarding Jefferson? Starting him helps the offense but hurts the defense, so would you put him in as the reserve at the 4 and 5?

if the celtics win another championship this year, i dont care if we go through 20 more years like the ones we went through in the 90s and early part of this decade.

i like how our franchise future has turned out over that past 3 seasons, we took the bad and we got our fair share of good.

The team could have been modestly good but they could have also been a .500 team. PP could have complained or pull a carter. Rondo might not have developed as he has in the last year.

It is funny because I always wonder what we would be like if we had taken Kevin Martin (instead of Delonte) and gotten Danny Granger instead of Gerald Green.

It's bad enough already that we're wasting $3 mil of cap for Scal, without wasting another $13 mil on Lafrentz and yet another $13 mil on Wally (admittedly, he's got some value, just not $13 mil). One of the best things about the current team IMO is we don't have to look at a waste of space making 8 figures sitting on the Celtics bench, like a lot of teams face. And like we seemed to have faced for a number of years before last. I really don't get this love of expiring contracts. It generally means you're overpaying someone, and you're counting down the days until you can get rid of him for nothing. No pleasure in that.

50 wins wasn't even top 10 in the league last year. It's pretty rare in 30 team leagues to get a championship, may as well just enjoy it because statistically your proposed team may not have had a sniff of playoff success, let alone championship.

Too young and inexperienced, would not have the confidence of a veteran team, and Paul Pierce most likely would have been traded. With Pierce I think that team is a team that would make the playoffs but not get home court advantage. It would get lucky to go past the first round. Kind of in the mold of a healthy Washington Wizards team.

At best, we would've been in the same situation for the next decade that we were with Antoine and Paul. We would've been a good team, maybe a top four seed consistently in the East and we could easily go a round or two deep every year, but realistically we'd always know we wouldn't be championship contenders. To be honest, I would rather not wish that on this franchise again. I'd like to believe we're legit championship contenders, even if our window's only open for a few years, then we could go back down, restock on talent/assets and rebuild for another window. We'd be better now with Paul before he retired (if they were going young, Danny would've traded Paul for youth), but I couldn't see us competing with Detroit, Cleveland, or even Orlando, even without considering inexperience.
