Fun stat: Rondo more aggressive = 94ppg to 107 Team ppg

Post#1 » by Al-Haqq » Sat Nov 29, 2008 10:15 pm

What are your thoughts on this fellas .....?

Since he has got his game into gear we have jumped our team ppg to 107ppg over the last 6 games [which is when he started being more aggressive].

A 13pt team increase from 94 pts.

Not bad hey?

I honestly doubt it's all because of him starting to play good again, I think it's more of some sort luck and goodness of the team from the day Rondo has played well. Though, I'm sure, Rondo has a really big impact on it.

There is a direct link between him increasing his FGA per game and our team PPG.

Go look at his game log and our team ppg over the last 6. He's playing well and we're scoring big numbers.

Al-Haqq, you are seeing the benefits of Rondo having the ball in his hands more on the offensive end. When he is allowed to be a threat to score, the defense collapses and he gets open looks for teammates. Taking the ball out of his hands and forcing him to play off the ball hurts the team's offensive efficiency.

An aggressive Rondo on offense equal a viable threat. You just can't get used to defending Garnett and Pierce and Ray. You've to account for Rondo and Perkins. Keep the defenses honest. Rivers and teammates know Rondo's capable of these offensive outputs but they're concern about his consistency. Teams will take you seriously when you're consistent. You can't be hot and cold unless your team's deep enough with other threats on offense to offset your struggles.

Rondo is 4th in the L in Assist to TO ratio.
Rondo is 4th in the L in Steals per game.
Rondo is 4th in the L in FG% among PG's.

He has proven himself to be a very efficient player. 2 for 2 with 8 assists is not a bad thing, but I, for one, would like to see Rondo consistantly get 10 shots a game, minimum. 2 shot qttempts is unacceptable.

While I haven't looked at the stats I think it is becoming accepted that the Celtic's offense performs much better when Rondo is aggressive for the obvious reason that teams can't use his defender to freelance as much. Early on it seemed that Rondo's outside shot would allow them to do this at will, but his ability to take it to the basket has negated that just as effectively by forcing teams to rotate, creating open shots or better match-ups. I don't know that his actual shot attempts needs to be anything more than attacking the opportunitys that present themselves, but he does need to get it up the floor quickly and penetrate so that the C's veteran ball movement can keep dissecting defenses. When teams are forced to respect Rondo we are playing 5 on 5 instead of 4 on 5 offensively, and the big 3 is just too good for most defenses played in that manner.

Theinteresting thing is that rondo really hasn't had to shoot much either. Tony Parker kind of pull that off a few years ago. He just needs to at least think about trying to score a little more.

The offense is at its best when Rondo is pushing the tempo and probing the defense off the dribble, he is every bit as capable of breaking down a defense as Chris Paul and Devin Harris because nobody can stay in front of them he just can't shoot the way they can or convert at the line.

If Rondo ever does get to 35-37% range from three while taking 2-3 of them a night and can get his free throw % into the mid 70's he'll be a hall of famer.

The guy isn't even 23 yet and he is already the best defensive PG in the league since Jason Kidd pre-microfracture surgery. If he can get his production into the 15-9-5-2 range he'd be every bit as valueable as Paul, Williams, Rose, Parker, Billups and Harris.

Largely because of Rondo our defense holds teams to about 90 points a night, it is also largely his inconsistint offensive effort that keeps a team with Pierce, Ray, KG, Powe, TA, etc from averaging 105 a night because we have the fire power.

On defense, a good point was made by the Raptors broadcasts that Rondo will gamble a lot as far as reaching in for stealing against his man. It's when you get burn swiping at the ball in hopes of creating a turnover that you might wonder if he shouldn't do it as often as he does. But, that's what Rondo does... He disrupts and agitates the opposing player.

On offense, beating his man or the defense off the dribble and driving to the basket works for him for scoring points. Raising his field goal percentage. However, to really expand on his offense, a nice pull-up shot or mid range go-to shot could be effective as part of his offensive game.
