OT: Dwayne Wade

Post#1 » by sam_I_am » Fri Dec 5, 2008 12:44 pm

On wiretap today is article about Dwayne Wade being called out by Dunleavy for getting away with palming the ball. It is about time somebody spoke up. I really like Wade and think he is good enough to be a star without palming. But is there another guy in the league who gets away with palming and traveling more than him? Does it just seem like he does it more because his quickness exagerates the moves?

I really can't stand it when lesser talented guys get called for every minor infraction - like Scal getting traveling calls every times he shuffles even a little bit or Perk for 3 seconds - but Wade gets away with taking 4 steps or wildly changing direction while carrying the ball across his whole body. Wouldn't every athletic player in the league love to get to play with the Wade rules?
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Scal doesnt know how to drubble without gett all screwed and shuffling his feet. that is a legite call. Now they have to start calling it on AI every other horrible offender of the traveling rule.

I can see why Wade would protest. The whole "crossover" business is built around a palm. OTOH whenever a lessor player tries it they get called on it. The league needs to crack down on it on a consistent basis.

As much as the spin moves are a problem I think that is more of a league wide thing. Wade creates even more of an illegal advantage on his crossover. He basically just palms the ball and places it around the defender so there is no chance for the man guarding him to get a piece of the ball... it also allows him to keep going at max speed. Other players around the league do it to a certain extent as well (Tony Allen ahem) but Wade seems to be about the worst with it right now.

Lebron James ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIHUikTgnqs & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH73R9GIbXg ) and Dwayne Wade travel so much it is ridiculous. I could get the rim against NBA defenders if i was allowed to just pick up the ball and run full speed.

It is possible to do a crossover or spin move without palming the ball. All you have to do is keep your hand from getting underneath the ball.

If you're going to do it the non-palming way though, it's more relyant on speed than head and shoulder fakes.. because you cant just sit there with the ball stuck to your hand.

you're supposed to do a crossover by dribbling the ball down at an angle so it comes up in your other hand (see old Timmy Hardaway footage, he was the master). Wade (others too but DW is among the worst) simply dribble the ball straight up, then cup the ball while it's in the air and move it to other side. That's palming, but I guess the L doesn't want to slow down scoring, especially by their marquee superstars.
