Trade for Joe Smith & Corey Brewer (4 for 2)
This trade can go thru December 15.
This trade works under trade ID 850813.
This trade also assumes that the Celtics will not be able to add
Dikembe Mutombo or Alonzo Mourning, who could simply sign as free agents.
The trade exploits the fact that the Celtics have about $425k salary to spare
on the salary that they send to Oklahoma City.
Boston sends Brian Scalabrine + Gabe Pruitt to Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City sends Joe Smith to Boston
Rationalale: Oklahoma city trades a 35 year old who longs to be on a contenter
in the last year of his contract,
Oklahoma City saves $660,000 in current year salary ($880k less salary x 12/16 paychecks),
and gains a point guard and "good guy" power forward who will
both fit in, play the right way, and have a great work ethic.
Because Boston is sending about $425k more salary to Oklahoma City than they need to,
the Celtics are able to simultaneously do the following trade
Boston sends Sam Cassell + Bill Walker to Minnesota
Minnesota sends Corey Brewer to Boston
Minnesota trades a player who will miss the entire season
(due to a torn ACL),
and saves $1,125,000 in salary this season
(because the league pays almost $500k of Cassell's salary),
and factoring in that only 4 of 16 paychecks will have been received by mid-December.
Minnesota gains another wing player to add to their mix of
Mike Miller, Rashad McCants and Rodney Carney;
and doesn't have to wait for Corey Brewer to heal.
Minnesota waives Sam Cassell, who they don't have a roster spot for,
and Cassell returns to the Celtics as a coach.
The Celtics can afford to wait for Corey Brewer to recover,
giving them a 6' 6.25" SF to play behind Paul Pierce next year.
Celtics end up with 13 players, plus Sam Cassell as a coach, and possible activee
(assumes someone doesn't get cut loose like Marbury).
Celtic depth chart after trade:
C: Kendrick Perkins / Joe Smith / Glen Davis / Patrick O'Bryant
PF: Kevin Garnett / Leon Powe / Joe Smith
SF: Paul Pierce / Ray Allen / Tony Allen / Corey Brewer (out this season for ACL)
SG: Ray Allen / Tony Allen / J. R. Giddens
PG: Rajon Rondo / Eddie House / Tony Allen
With two open roster spots (Patrick O'Bryant likely inactive),
the Celtics can try to pry Jason Williams, who retired after seeing the mess in Clipperland,
out of LA (if they just released him).
Williams had an offer from Doc Rivers for the vet minimum,
with no guarantee for of any playing time.
Instead, Jason Williams signed with the Clippers,
who led him to believe that he would be backing up Baron Davis.
When Jason Williams got to training camp,
the Clippers told him that he would have to earn his minutes.
He then retired, without giving much reason,
but it's pretty clear that he didn't want to be there.
Hopefully they just tear up the contract and set him free.
By him saying that he was retiring, I don't think that they have to pay him,
but they still control his rights for this year, I suspect.
If the Celtics can't get Jason WIlliams,
they still might get Steph Marbury if he is bought out.

I like the idea of bringing Smith here, but that second trade looks very far fetched.

Re: Trade for Joe Smith & Corey Brewer (4 for 2)
The Scal/Pruit for Smith trade works but there is no trade exception created for Boston if anything it is the other way Scal/Pruit make 3.9 mil combined Smith 4.8 mil.
That doesn't really matter though because you can't do anything with a trade exception except use it by itself as the salary in a trade. No adding to it another contract or using the 125% rule or anything.
The second deal makes no sense what so ever. Why exactly would Boston make that trade? Why not just cut Sam if you need a roster spot? Why cut Sam for JWill? I like Walker better than Brewer anyhow especially now that his knee is just as much of a question mark and at least he doesn't have a lottery pick contract.

Re: Trade for Joe Smith & Corey Brewer (4 for 2)
sully: It's not a trade exception. Since they are simultaneous trades, the Celtics can use the total outgoing salary of the 4 players +/-125% +/- $100K to fall within the limits of the CBA in terms of the amount of the total salary that they are allowed to bring back (in a simultaneous trade).
The one to Oklahoma city works on it's home, it's just you can take a guy who won't play this year from Minnesota.
I think that Brewer is a better player than Walker, by a lot.
But Minnesota not only has to wait to next year, they wouldn't normally be able to trade Brewer for anything of value until he played a while to demonstrate that he was healthy.
The second trade is a win win for both sides, too; although I could see why many posters would pass on the Minnesota side of the trade. It's basically Walker for Brewer, but Brewer is on the scale of a #6 pick. Since the Celtics are in lux tax land, that might make a difference to them this year and next, but as I recall, the year that Boston picked Jeff Green for Seattle in the Ray Allen trade, Danny Ainge was rumored to like Corey Brewer, Yi, Joakim Noah and Jeff Green as possible #5 picks.

The Brewer Walker deal doesn't make any sense. We are trying to win it all this year. We would never trade for a guy who can't even play. Come on now..

Re: Trade for Joe Smith & Corey Brewer (4 for 2)
Gabe Pruitt really has next to no value right now, so I couldn't see OKC wanting to give a roster spot to him right now. I also can't see them wanting to pick up Scal for any reason. If they wanted to dump Joe Smith, they'd buy him out and save the money and roster spots instead of filling it with players they likely have absolutely no interest in. Replace Gabe with Glen Davis and the deal maybe gets done, but I'd say save the prospect and wait for him to inevitably get bought out.
Minnesota would never do the second deal. They can afford more than we can to wait on Corey Brewer as they aren't going to be doing anything with that team at least for this year. He has a lot more potential and experience than Walker and Carney gives them more now than what Walker would.
Also, isn't Jason Williams done? Not just retired, but I thought part of the reason he retired was his recent injury history. I can't remember the specifics, but it doesn't sound like we could pry him out and he'd be less of what Cassell offers us now. Just keep Sam, he'll probably willingly give up his roster spot when the buyouts start coming and he'll join our coaching staff.

Jammer
Again you deal doesn't work. Are you trying to trade Sam as 1.2 mil in salary, he only counts as $800,000?
I still think that the idea of the C's trading Bill Walker on a 4 year deal that totals 3 mil bucks for Corey Brewer who is making over 3 mil a year coming off knee surgery and frankly not being that good is crazy talk to a team in Lux Tax land.
But I say bring on Joe Smith though I would rather try and unload Giddens than Pruitt. It isn't even a player issue anymore we are just super deap at SG, and little at the point, so even if Pruitt isn't the guy at least he isn't under contract next season.

I like the first, but I don't think that Smith will help any more than Powe or BBD. We need a big center and a back-up SF, Smith is neither of those

Sully:
You're right. Only the Joe Smith side works.
Scal + (any one of Pruitt, Davis, Walker or Giddens) works for Joe Smith.
The Minnesota side doesn't because although Sam Cassell is making $1,262,275 this year,
the Celtics only pay $711,000 of that.
The part that the league pays doesn't count in the trade calculation.
So forget about the Minnesota trade.
It's Scal + one of (Pruitt, Davis, Walker or Davis) for Joe Smith.
It seems to me that Oklahoma City would be most interested in
either a point guard or a shooting guard,
which would eliminate Glen Davis.

Re: Trade for Joe Smith & Corey Brewer (4 for 2)
This is a good trade idea in theory but why would OKC trade for young PG when they have Russell Westbrook and Earl Watson? That trade doesn't do anything for them but save them a few $$$. Also why would the Celtics trade for Cory Brewer who is hurt right now? Plus I think Bill Walkers has a much better upside the Cs just need to give the young man a chance.

Joe Smith is the man for the job in beantown as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully he's bought out and the Celtics are able to release/trade a player for a pick in order to scoop him up. He'd make our second unit offense hum by providing spacing and veteran savvy.

Bill Walker + Gabe Pruit >> Corey brewer imo.
Smith is a temporary guy. I wouldn't trade two promising young talents for him. We can win a title without Joe.

Re: Trade for Joe Smith & Corey Brewer (4 for 2)
the window is now.. not next year or whenever it is that corey brewer could help us. Joe Smith is a nice enough player so I could live with that deal IF Danny knows for sure there is no chance of PJ reupping. I still think Gabe could be a really nice player for us but he's not getting any minutes and it would open up room for Giddens. I would like to see a big man plus another 3 point shooter on the roster. Doc should give POB minutes to see if he can develop. He can block shots but otherwise he lacks a "motor" that good NBA players need. He did go to the ground in the last game for a ball so that's a good sign but in general it doesn't look like he plays hard

Re: Trade for Joe Smith & Corey Brewer (4 for 2)
Scal + Davis for Smith wouldn't be bad. Smith is a clear upgrade over Davis, so any trade for Smith would reduce Davis's mins anyway. We clear some salary for next season. Davis may not resign with us anyway, so we get something in return who can help us now. OKC gets a good young big man with upside in Davis. Scal is a good defender and team guy, which OKC needs.

We are all aware that Corey Brewer tore his ACL and wasn't very good in the first place, right? Bill Walker is more of an NBA player than Brewer right now.

Thought I had mention something about Brewer being hurt right now during my first post. I guess no one paid attention to that. Plus I agree with you Bill Walker is better then Cory Brewer. Brewer gets all the hype because he was on a winning college team. The only player I would want from that Gator team is Al Horford.

I like the Scala and Pruitt for Joe Smith deal, but see no reason why Minny would do the 2nd one. Corey Brewer is a recent lottery pick who hasn't been in the league that long while Bill Walker is a 2nd rounder.

Yeah, I don't see them giving up on Brewer just yet.
