Why is Sam Cassel still on the bench?

Post#1 » by kevin_405 » Sun Jan 4, 2009 2:53 pm

What is Sam Cassel doing on the bench , he does not seem to be getting any minutes. Is this an effort to buy Sam a ring.

Why isn't he getting waived if the Celts have a hard time creating roster space to add to their bench strenght..

It's what Sam is doing in practice now which is most important. Rondo and Pruitt making big strides this year, I've got to think that at least in part this is because Sam is working with them. There have been comments made before that Rondo listens to Sam moreso than any of the coaches.

Sam will know all the plays, will be in reasonable shape, and if they need him, he'll be able to jump in quite well without much effort. I don't think there ever was the intent for him to play 82 games, he's on the roster for practice purposes, to ease into coaching, with possible activation later in the year.

Sam might yet get waived, but I doubt there has been anything that has come along that Ainge has wanted to add to the roster. So his roster spot isn't an issue. Yet.

Also, from the standpoint of a trade, Sam would be a perfect throw in from the standpoint of salary if needed. He'd be waived, 30 days later rejoin the Celtics roster or coaching staff.

I guess they want to make sure they definitely get Marbury before waiving him. But he is the most likely to go. Perhaps he will accept an assistant coach position shortly afterwards.

I predict that he will be traded and waived. Come back with us 30 days after the trade and get started playing. Ainge doesn't want his investment hurt.

The plan all along has been to play Sam in the 2nd half of the season and in the playoffs. The Celtics are sticking to that plan so far.

I don't think they can stick to that plan. We've already got Ray, Rondo, Tony, House and soon we might have Marbury. I don't see any minutes being left for Cassell.

I've always been under the impression that Sam would only be used if Rondo sustained a long term injury. He's just an insurance package. If we bring in Marbury, then he will be removed from the roster.
