Roster improvements by Cavs and Celtics

Post#1 » by stretch » Mon Jan 12, 2009 9:50 pm

1. How scary is the possibility that Cleveland could easily swing a trade to net someone like Marcus Camby, Shawn Marion, Antawn Jamison, or Michael Redd? They could feasibly trade for a quality big man or scorer to add to their rotation.

2. Perhaps the best case you could make about the loss of Posey was made by Doc Rivers. He basically said that besides Paul Pierce, the Celtics don't really have anyone to put on LeBron. You can't put the shorter TA on him (or at least the shorter TA of the 2008-09 season).

I don't know how much TA will improve the second half or how healthy he'll be. Besides somehow nabbing Joe Smith, or barring some miraculous development by Bill Walker in learning the Celtics system, I'm not sure where we could possibly get another body (a 3 or 4) that we could put on LeBron for a stretch.. that would at least make him earn his offense. I mean, if the Cavs get Pierce in early foul trouble in any game, the Celts are very likely to lose that game.. And for some reason, Ray Allen plays relatively worse against Cleveland, and if Pierce devotes his energy to guarding LeBron.. we could have a hard time scoring.

3. I hope I'm not in a minority, but the Celtics roster as it stands could certainly repeat in 09. But without any roster modifications, that truly isn't very likely.

4. Dream scenario: the Celtics somehow work a trade or two, and a waiver/buyout or two, that would open up roster spots for 2 of: Joe Smith, Alonzo Mourning, and/or PJ Brown.

Add one or two of those guys alongside KG, Perk, and Powe, and you've got yourself a solid big man rotation.

5. At least this summer, we have a good shot at getting Rasheed Wallace (I've already documented and further inferred his close friendships with Doc and KG last year) for the next season or two.. and we'll finally see that dream big man rotation of KG/Perk/Sheed!

I agree with your post. The bottom line is that the cavs will end up landing another impact player because of Wally (the sports guy mentioned that at the start of the season) and will get better while the celtics will not be able to make such a move.

This situation has existed for awhile, remember that no trades have happened yet. Sometimes teams get a star for an expiring, sometimes nothing happens.

Cleveland does have a chance to make a big upgrade this winter, but they're still Lebron and duct tape. LJB could be like Iverson- good enough when he's young to carry a team to the Finals, but not good enough to win it all.

We've still got options. Next season, we'll have 24 million in expiring contracts.

Pierce, Garnett, Perk, Rondo, + whatever we can get on the trade market. Next season is when we reload.

Apparently, we're going to miss out on ALONZO MOURNING, though you never know.

He would be huge for our toughness. If he does resign with the Heat, that's another blow to the C's (on top of the reports that Deke wanted to come here, was friends with Pagliuca's family, and that the Celtics were instead apparently passing him over for less likely pursuits of Zo/PJ/or Smith).

we should trade ray allen for jason terry, sign FA forward, forget marbury and a big guy, probably we should get rid of rondo too i'm starting to really dislike this guy for his performance lately, trade him for any pg who can shoot and have a good dribble.

you guys have the best starting 5 in the league without question but your bench needs help. teams are beggining to figure you out and i dont think that powe, house and lol scalabrine are the answers. so if i were the gm i would do something like ray allen and kendrick perkins to chicago for larry hughes, ben gordon and tyrus thomas or something like that.

pg-rondo/hughes/house
sg-hughes/gordon/allen
sf-pierce/allen/walker
pf-thomas/powe/scalabrine
c-garnett/davis/obryant

You can say it all you want, but the idea won't get any better.

The bit about Deke planning on signing here was hard to read. If true, I wish the team had moved faster.

This is a pretty random thought but what about Earl Watson? It seems as if he's on his way out of OKC and we also want Joe Smith. Is there any kind of trade we could put together to get both of them?

I wouldn't trade Perk straight-up for Thomas (or Noah for that matter).

i said SOMETHING LIKE that. i didnt say that exact trade. just trade ray allen for a starter and a top of the line bench player. you guys all the time say that ray is no good anymore. so y get pissed when i say that. and besided gordon has better NUMBERS this year that allen. so it is basically perkins for hughes and thomas. bottom line cased closed. I WIN
