Pau was a max contract he was on the first leg but he was still a max contract. There were no other options as far as expiring deals. They would have listened if the Bulls wanted to sign PJ to a S&T one year but they wanted to move one of their guys under contract.
Everything you are saying they should have done involves taking on a contract for 40-60 million dollars and still not being very good or likely any better than they are now. They want to be the Bulls and the Hawks and to and extent the Hornets let it grow and see what happens. People hating on the trade want them to sacrifice what is most valuable to them, money for things they have plenty of lottery picks and young talent.
