Sign and Trade Powe or Davis

Post#1 » by Rocky5000 » Wed Feb 11, 2009 7:09 pm

Since both of these guys are expiring, and expecting a larger contract next year, wouldn't now be the opportune time to decide which one to keep and which one to let go? Instead of letting 1 of these 2 guys walk, we can get something out of it.

To me, Powe holds the most trade value on account of his postseason play last year, I'd estimate his next contract to be somewhere between 3-5 million per year. Big Baby, still hasn't proven much to the league, so his deal would probably check in somewhere around 2 million or less.
In terms of potential, I don't see Leon developing much more, but I think Big Baby can continue to improve his perimeter game and increase his role on our team. Additionally, Big Baby can play the 5 spot better than Powe, which we need from time to time.
Since Leon can bring back the most in a trade, and Big Baby will be more cost effective to resign, I think it makes sense to S&T Leon before the trade deadline.

What do you think? What are some possible destinations for Leon or Big Baby?

I'd keep BBD if only because Leon seems to have regressed some this year. It may just be that the bench, as constituted, doesn't allow his game to flourish, but he really has struggled a good portion of this season.

What does sign and trade have to do with it? Why not just trade them? Can contracts even be extended right now? Teams that want them would just sign them.

Actually, are they RFAs or UFAs? Since they were 2nd rounders, I'm not sure.

Hmm. I think you're right about the deadline for contract extensions I didn't realize that existed.
Both Leon and Big Baby are RFAs, so we could match. But it seems very likely one will be gone by the start of next year.

It's plausible since they're RFA's - a team could trade for them to avoid the risk of us matching. Of course, we could always just do a sign and trade this summer.

They should deal Powe with Cassell at the deadline to a team looking to save money in 2009-10..
