I think Boston will roll with only 14 players out of camp.

Leon is not "very young" he was 25 this past season and more importantly he has the knees of a 10 year NFL lineman.

On Boston's summer league team you have Nick Fazekas and Robert Swift, while not without some questions themselves they are significantly younger and much more upside because of their size than Leon.

Leon is a good bench player but I don't think he is an NBA starter and he is not the type of player you invest money in to nurse back to health. I hope I am wrong but my guess is that if he gets signed it will be to a non guaranteed deal and when he can't go in DEC he gets cut.

Leon was our best post player on the offensive side. I hope we have a roster spot for him and that he comes back healthy.

I just don't think this guys knees are ever going to hold up. That's why he wasn't selected in the first round and that's why he was available. He's basically going to have to slog through the rest of his career. He has the heart and work ethic to pull it off but it seems like a longshot for him to stay consistently healthy ever again. There is no sense in resigning this guy if the prognosis for recovery doesn't look good, and I'm willing to bet that it doesn't.

If Leon proves he is healthly and no other team signs him he will be back with the Celtics. The Celtics love Leon because he is one of the only players on the team that plays 6 feet from the basket. Perk is the only other player like Leon in that respect.

First off:

- Team is doing the right thing - gotta take care of the holes on your roster with players that will be ready to play to start the season.

- Powe is unlikely to be signed by anyone just to rehab. Most every team will probably do the same thing and wait to see when he is ready to go - so there is a chance he is signed earlier, but it is far more likely that he will be available until he is ready to go.

- People need to look up ACL surgery and recovery - the likelyhood of re-injury is a myth - all recovery is based on the success of the surgery, not the fact that there has been a past injury - if surgery is successful and rehab is dilligent and not rushed, the patient can have a stronger knee than before - out of the dozens of modern ACL, (last 5-7 years) the amount of re-occuring injuries is slim to none - Leon was unlucky, but its not trend-indicative.

- Nick Fazekas and Robert Swift have NBA talent, but neither has "higher potential" based solely off their height - that's a ridiculous statement Sully, sorry...you produce or you don't, height is not the determining factor. Leon is light years ahead of what these two have accomplished.

- A healthy Powe can start in this league and likely will at some point - his face up and ISO game have never been utilized in Boston's system with the role he had and he injured himself right as he was getting the opportunity to expand his game - much like Davis was just allowed to do - WHEN he is back at 100 percent, likely next season, he will continue to show his worth...hopefully Boston gets lucky and can re-up him around February for the playoff push...

I just hope that when some other team comes up with an offer for Leon, whenever that is, he gives us the right to match it. And then I really hope that we do.

Fazekas and Swift are younger now than Leon was entering the league and they have the talent and height to play their position on both ends and actually have skills he does not either possess or at least display. It is much more likely at this point that these two will be more effective NBA F/C than Leon will be. They may not be the per minute rebounder or low post scorer but overall more effective players and it has to do with their height. They would not likely be NBA players without it and Leon would be significantly better NBA player if he was 6'10".

You know it is true.

Giving the guy a guaranteed one year contract is the right thing to do, in different respects as well. He's not just a nice guy but has been a part of our success and is expected to be healthy and able to contribute come playoff time.

I understand we want roster spot flexibility. It doesn't make sense to sign Powe for next season just yet. But I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen before the start of the regular season (unless he ends up getting a good offer from another team, in which case hopefully all works out well).

My vague recollection on Leon's surgery from the reports was that it was a micro-fracture surgery... Is that true or did I just imagine I saw that?

It was and while I think he will be able to resume basketball activities I don't think he will be an NBA player until next season. Almost everyone has sat out a calendar year.
