I'm pretty sure that the title is correct. What's the reasoning behind me saying that? Well, both teams were/are older, and I think the Celtics might run out of gas at the end this year, just like San Antonio did last year.
I'll start with the Spurs of last year. When you looked at their roster last season, I noticed that there were a lot of older names that had been in the league a long time. A few are Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Michael Finley, Kurt Thomas, and guys like that. Honestly, that's not going to get the job done.
As the season wore on, the fatigue started getting obvious. The Spurs' Gregg Popovich tried to help his guys out by giving them rests (see Tim Duncan sitting out games to rest his knee). Now I'm not saying that his knee wasn't hurting him, but what I am saying is that it probably could have healed in less time. As for Finley, he really didn't play well after the mid-point of the season. The rest of the Spurs started to slow down, except for one guy, Tony Pakrer. We all know that one player can't win games by himself, and that was obvious in the playoffs.
Now that I've gone through briefly why I'm labeling this years Celtics as last years Spurs, I will tell you why the C's are like them.
When you look at Boston's roster, what do you see? Sure, big names yes, but names that are starting to get older and older. Kevin Garnett is the first name that comes to my mind. He's still got great basketball in him, but can he stay away from injury problems and fatigue? That remains to be seen. Another player is Ray Allen. I think his struggles in the playoffs sometimes have to do with being tired. Once Allen gets a rest, like I saw in the Bulls series last year, he is pretty dangerous shooting the ball. Paul Pierce is the third big name that I think about. Pierce isn't all that old, but honestly I've seen him starting to slow down. C's fans want him to take over games like he did two years ago, but he wasn't as aggressive. He has to sit out more games because of injury than he used to.
Other guys on the Celtics who have age going against them are Rasheed Wallace, Eddie House, and there are others, just look at a roster. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying they will be just like the Spurs, but I wouldn't be surprised if they turn out like them, just because the rosters were made up just about the same way...around veteran leadership.
