10 things: most you already know

Post#1 » by Gant » Mon Jul 20, 2009 11:54 pm

You already know a lot about the coming season. You know almost everything. And very little of what you don't already know is of much importance:

1) Starters

You already know it's the same starting five: Rondo, Ray Allen, Pierce, Garnett, Perkins. Yes Rasheed could theoretically start over Perk, but he won't. If you don't know why go to the back of the class and study harder.

2) Sixth Man

You already know it's Rasheed Wallace. He's the best guy off the bench. He's a true star quality sixth man in the wonderful tradition of Ramsey, Havlicek, McHale, and Walton.

3) Seventh Man

You already know it's Marquis Daniels. He's the first wing off the bench and the first sub in for either Pierce or Ray.

4) Eddie

You already know the Celtics are going to use Eddie House pretty much the same way they've been using him. Why? Because what he does well he does great, and what he doesn't do well- Well he doesn't do that stuff very well, does he? So he'll be the eighth/ninth/tenth man- a situational long distance threat and sometimes back up point guard, depending on the match ups. You already knew that though.

5) Summary To This Point

Listed above is like 90% of everything important, so what you don't know is either unimportant or part of the other 10%:

6) The 10% You Don't Know, part 1

You don't know if Big Baby's coming back. If he is, he's in the rotation as a fill-in utility big guy and high energy youngster. If he's not Danny will bring in someone else to fill that role.

7) The 10% You Don't Know, part 2

Then there's Scalabrine. If he's still on the team he'll sub-in as needed. Same as always, hopefully sans concussions.

8) The 10% You Don't Know, part 3

Danny might bring in a vet point. Or he might not.

9) The 10% You Don't Know, part 4

You don't know who of the following will be on the roster: Bill Walker, Gabe Pruitt, Lester Hudson, Robert Swift, JR Giddens, and Tony Allen. Even if they are on the roster you don't know if any of those guys will be in the rotation.

10) The Unimportant Thing You Don't Know

You don't know who's going to wear a green uniform and not play, who's going to watch the game in a suit, and who's going to be a go-to-guy for the Portland Red Claws.

(Oh one other thing: We don't really know how Kevin Garnett's knee is yet. We might think we know, but we don't and we won't until we see him play.)

Here's the point: It's all set up. 90% of the rotation is there to see.

Ray won't be traded. Rondo won't be traded. The only thing that will happen between now and camp are minor finishing touches.

What is unknown, aside from KG's knee, doesn't matter. But what is known is powerful and beautiful. This could be one of the greatest defensive clubs of all time. It looks like the best Celtic team since 1986.

I know San Antonio, LA, Cleveland and Orlando are good, but I weep for them.

They are going to get stomped.

If we stay healthy. If KG can stay healthy I think we will be better than the last 2 years,

I think KG will be a somewhat lesser player than two or three years ago. Statistically he is showing some of the tell tale signs of aging: fewer rebounds and less free throw attempts. The key, in my view, is Rondo. If he plays like he did in portions of last season and in the Bulls series, the Cs will be able to defeat anyone. If he does not, if he plays like in the Orlando series, we will be very good but we will not win the title. We won't get by the league's tall timber.

Big difference between 2008 and 2010: Orlando, Cleveland and LAL are all much better than they were in 2008. Possibly SA, too.

Rondo is the key. If he continues to improve and build on the Bulls series, we have a very good shot at 18.

We didn't land KG til July 31st, so I wouldn't necessarily rule out a blockbuster.

If something ridiculous becomes available (Chris Paul, D-Wade) I'd hope Danny makes the move.

Very, very confident in the team huh? I'm not doubting them, just intriqued by everyone's confidence. Grant it you guys are lucky enough to have 3 potential HOF, so it's truely your own fault if you guys cannot get the job done, but saying that everyone else is going to get stomped? I wouldn't be so free to open my mouth if I were you guys. It's a LONG season, as evident from last year. Injuries play a role, and your team isn't exactly the youngest of the bunch. (i.e. see 3 of your top 6 guys) who are all injury prone as evident from the past. Additionally, the Celtics of 2 years ago played in a much weaker league. I mean, some teams took you guys 7 games like ATL, and CLE, but even LA was nowhere near where they're at now. CLE, ORL, LA - they're all MUCH better and YOUNGER, which is going to be much tougher for you guys come playoff time when they have that much more energy. Who is going to get that board? KG after 90 games with a bum knee or a 24 year old Dwight Howard? Let me think real hard... Not to mention SA is back, but I wouldn't worry about them just yet, I'd just worry more about getting out of your own conference first.

There's a reason for confidence.

There are 5 title contenders: Boston, LA, Orlando, SA, and Cleveland. All of them have great offense. All can score.

But defensively the Celtics are far better than any other team. That will win them the title.

As far as injuries- it can happen to any team. The Celtics are no more susceptible than the others.

Although LA's defense comes and goes, when they decide to play their defense is extremely strong as well. I don't believe you guys have a better defense than SA.

The Celtics are no more susceptible to injuries than others? That may be true, unless your players have past injuries or they are older (i.e. therefore MORE susceptible). KG and Wallace both have their issues. Neither Pierce nor Allen are getting any younger. A lot of the season - both towards the end of the regular season when you're battling for home advantage, and playoffs, is going to depend on the production of your bench. And to be honest, other than Wallace or Perk (whoever comes off the bench) and House, you guys are not all too deep. It may be better than the CLE bench, but Orlando's second line would wipe the floor with you, as well as LA (provided Odom re-signs). That is something that is going to be crucial when it comes down to teh end of the season when all your guys need rest, and the deeper you get into the playoffs.

I'm just saying, the Celtics have a great team. They've been a great team. But don't count your chickens before they hatch. Saying you're going to "wipe the floor" and "stomp" competition are tough claims to make in a league such as today. Despite all the positives this team has put forth, there are a underlying and overwhelming amount of deficiencies, unless everything just goes PERFECT. And this is life, we all should know nothing ever goes perfectly. Just saying, I wouldn't be so quick to open my mouth if I were you guys.

Boston's defense doesn't come and go. It stays. It's better than LA's or anyone else's. Much better. It's better than San Antonio. With Rasheed, it's better than the Boston defense of the past two years.

The Celtics bench when it's finished will be fine. It's Rasheed, Daniels, House, Big Baby or whoever he brings back, and maybe another vet acquisition.

As far as the injuries- they can happen to anyone. The Celtics lost two key guys last year. One had never been injured before and one was young. It's not fated; it's bad luck.

Being a Boston fan I won't knock you for not being capable of reading past that sentence to see the rest of my points, despite how realistic and present they may be.

It's okay though - apparently you know it all and I can't wait to see those '09-10 champions - I'm sure they'll be wearing green.

Sorry for the semi-rant, but here goes...

Who's forum is this, anyway? Isn't this the Boston Celtics' forum? Why shouldn't Boston fans, posting in *this* forum be able to write that this year's C's are the *best* team of all time, if we want to, and even if they aren't? Why shouldn't we be able to post outrageous things about how good we are and how bad everyone, anyone, else is...in *this* forum? Why do we have fans from other forums come in here and berate our posters for our optimism, why, why, why?

If this was the General forum, if this was some other teams forum, then sure, we should be reasonable, respectful, and courteous...even if we *know* in our heart of hearts that we're right...but this is OUR forum. In our forum, Gant should be able to say we're going to stomp every team under the sun and the rest of you lesser team's fans should stay out of it.

As far as I'm concerned, this forum is for Celtics' fans, and anyone who isn't can keep their comments to themselves! Okay, okay! It's a free country and that isn't going to happen. Heck, it's clear that some of *us* enjoy arguing back and forth with fans of other teams, and fans of those other teams can't resist posting in here, so I'll never get my wish. Dang it!

...semi-rant off.

ps. To the poster who said we were "lucky" to have 3 potential HOFers in our lineup...yeah, if luck is being prepared to take advantage of the opportunity when it arises. Danny, Doc and the ownership made the right decisions (keeping Pierce), doing the hard work (scouting, drafting and developing lowish picks into valuable trading chips) to get our organization *ready* to be able to acquire Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett when the time was right. If that's luck, then yeah, we're "lucky!" For 20 years the C's tried to get lucky, then we got wise and started making our own luck. See where it has gotten us? Top of the heap! Where the Celtics belong and where we plan to stay!

Could you name me a player, on any team, who IS getting younger? Last time I checked Benjamin Button was not on an NBA roster. Perhaps Phoenix will sign him.
