Roster Set?

Post#1 » by ParticleMan » Mon Aug 17, 2009 1:19 pm

http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... and_trade/

With Daniels looking like he will be aboard via the LLE, that pretty much limits anything else that we can do this year. We now have 14 players under contract.

Bigs: Perk, Sheed, KG, Baby, Shelden, Scal
Wings: Pierce, Ray, Daniels, Tony, Giddens, Walker
PGs: Rondo, House

What do we do with the last spot?
1. We could pick up some retread vet like Bowen or Lue
2. We could use it on Hudson and keep him in the D-league
3. We could leave it open and hope that someone useful gets cut from some other team

My preference would be #2, but if Danny doesn't think Hudson will help (or can convince him to go to Europe) then I'd just do #3. I don't think it's useful to bring in some lame vet to sit at the end of the bench.

Scal+TA will give us some nice flexibility at the trade deadline, so if we sit tight and evaluate what we need by then, we should be in good shape to land a good player who becomes available.

Retread vet like Starbury
Banned temporarily for, among other sins, being "Extremely Deviant".

Not by a longshot. I expect two of (Tony Allen, Giddens & Walker) to be moved before the start of the season. Daniels might not be signed until close to training camp, there is no rush to do it right now despite what media people write.

I agree. We're done for the offseason, maybe make a move at the trading deadline.

There's way too much clutter with Ray, Daniels, TA, JR, Walker, Pierce all playing similar roles. TA will be traded with either JR or Walker, and Scal maybe included depending on what's coming back.

I'd be shocked if any of those guys are moved, for many reasons.

First, those guys' value are very low right now, and Ainge isn't a sell-low kind of guy. Second, they won't fetch anything decent in return, I mean Indy would rather lose Daniels for nothing than take back those guys, that's pretty damning.

But the biggest reason is that it limits our future flexibility. with Scal+TA that's 6mil in conrtacts, meaning we can take back a guy making 7.5 mil, or even more if we throw in JR or Bill or someone. that's a good player. right now we don't know what we will need for the stretch run, maybe someone gets injured and we need a big-time talent. if we blow our wad now we won't be able to gear up for the stretch run with a high-quality player.

I really don't think Ainges is gonna mess around and do the trading deadline or waiver wire thing again. We already got burnt with that with Marbury and Moore. I think Ainge is gonna try to have his roster set as much as possible before training camp.

I think Tony is here till the deadline. My best bet is we use the last spot on Hudson and invite Swift to camp. Maybe if Tony can shine in pre season someone will be willing to trade for him. Swift would give us another big to throw at Shaq/Howard.

The difference is that we have fairly big expiring deals this year. So we don't have to settle for scrubs or waiver wire pickups. Alston, Wilcox, and Hughes were all traded at the deadline last season but we weren't in the running because we didn't have the chips. This year we will have the chips to trade unless we blow them all before the season starts.

I hope you're right, and I see what you're saying. JR, Scal, and TA could return a pretty nice player. btw, hoopshype is reporting 2 years for Daniels. That would be pretty sweet. I would have thought he'd take a 1 year deal, and go for more money next summer.

if/when we sign daniels. That's 14 fo sho.
If we stand pat on trades.
we need to sign a point guard (which point want's to win a ring, any takers?)
save those expiring contracts for the mid game. And hope nobody goes down to injury.
I like bostons odds. some body goes down we have outs at the mid game.

Depth chart without the name of the point guard.

rondo: house daniels (point)
jesus: house daniels allen giddens
truth: daniels walker allen scal
kg : sheed baby scal williams
perk: sheed baby scal williams

Opinion on depth chart.
Honestly sg and power forward and center we are damn deep.
I'm even good at the small forward.
I think we have a top five pg in the starter outside of that we have fill in fodder.
Our roster on paper is overall a tie with three teams.

Call me crazy but I am not confident in the Daniels signing till he is actually SIGNED. <g> Until that could happens anything could go down. Ainge might even expand the Daniels sign and trade to encompass other players and other teams.

So I'm just gonna go ahead and assume two players will be moved in a Daniels S&T. And Danny will likely add another deep 3 if the reports on Bowen are true. This would leave us with a 13 man roster. We know Danny likes to keep a roster spot open, which would leave us with one more potential signing. And that 14th spot signing will very likely be a PG.
So the question is, do we use that 14th spot on Hudson, or do we send Hudson overseas if he's willing to go and sign a vet min PG - Brevin Knight, Lue, maybe Carlos Arroyo, etc.?

Likely Roster:

Rondo, House, ?
RA, Daniels, Giddens
PP, ?, open
KG, Baby, Scal
Perks, Sheed, Williams

Considering It's very unlikely Hudson will be a contributor next year it might be better to send him overseas and save a roster spot. But we could also send him to the DL, and use the 15th spot for a midseason backcourt acquisition if we need it. hmmm.
