Re: WBCN to become a Sports Talk station soon
BCN sold their soul a long time ago but damn this pisses me off. It feels like a piece of the city has been taken from me. They literally introduced the country to U2, as the first station in the country to play them. If I remember right it was the same deal with The Pixies.
WERS (88.9 for those in the dark) is the only station on the FM side of the dial that's worth listening to. Best college radio station in the country for a reason.
It sucks that WEEI has the rights to the Celtics broadcasts... I'd love to hear Grande and Cornbread on the air more outside of the celts games. I'm assuming they couldn't fool around with this new station, right?

Re: WBCN to become a Sports Talk station soon
Maxwell is a regular co host on the Big Show.
The new station is going to be Patriots talk not Celtic talk. First off Felger hates basketball and knows nothing about it and has been football and hockey writer and at times at least likes to think he knows something about baseball. Tanguay wants to be a basketball guy but he will likely go back to his usual role on the Patriots broadcasts were he says something stupid and gets tooled on for it.

I don't think I have ever heard Felger say anything good about the celtics. He completely bashed them when they lost game 7 and he completely bashed them for signing Sheed. All he says is negetive stuff. I guess his MO is to be "hard hitting" but it gets old quickly and I think he does it for attention.
95% of the time WEEI talks about is baseball. More or less this is how is goes.
Jan-March They talk about what the redsox can do to improve the roster. Some trades they can make and how spring training is coming up soon.
April-October All red sox all the time. 24/7
November to December- They talk about how the season ended, and what they can do to improve next year. Of course every idiot in Boston calls and proposes ridiculous trade ideas during this time.
I honestly do not understand the love for baseball. It is one of the most boring sports to watch.
With that said people love the red sox in Boston so I do not believe that the new sports station will have much of an impact on WEEI.

Reggie stood out like a sore thumb no tattoos no agenda no chirping nothing Just a guy who could score at will He played college ball at Northeastern he replaced Larry as Celtics captain he belonged to Boston.
And I still miss him. Even now.

No, but Toucher and Rich in the morning are awesome. Really funny stuff, and they have a lot of common sense and usually point out those who don't.
Oh I agree. Toucher and Rich are pretty good. But I like them better on the rock format. Will be interested to see how they do on sports radio.

Well, the way I see it is funny is funny no matter what the topic it. And I almost guarantee they'll publicly take on D&C. They did it with WAAF and the Sandbox. It should be good.

What did they do for their last day? I don't listen to the radio for music.

Right now, they're airing Super Bowl XXXIX of the New England Patriots versus the Philadelphia Eagles (presumingly) in its entirety.

I only listened to the last hour, they had a couple sentimental conversations among vets, played "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" by Pink Ployd as the last song, a brief audio history of the station then it went to static..

sad to see a rock station leave the air, but you guys dont know how lucky you are to get a sports talk station on the FM dial. Here in southern california all the sports talk stations are on the AM side, therefore at night you lose the signal,at least at night you'll actually be able to hear the station. btw i live aroumd 100 miles from los angeles, and sometimes the AM signal doesnt even come in very clear during the day,and at night you might as well forget about even trying to gat an AM station unless you live in the city of L.A.. BTW will i be able to hear this new sports talk station on the internet? diehard celtics fan for over 45 years!!!

Kinda sucks that it falls under the umbrella of cbs sports, I'd prefer no clear bias, but that doesn't happen these days. They have facebook, twitter and all that crap too.

Way to open your station up by going against a Red Sox game, what genius lined that one up I wonder.

What's interesting is that 98.5 will carrying the Patriots and Bruins games which make me wonder if those sports will dominate the topics on a weekly basis.
In a way, I don't see the point (besides the fact they're opening up the pre-season against them) of broadcasting a re-airing of the Patriots versus Eagles Super Bowl game if you consider that it's the Patriots versus the Giants Super Bowl game that's likely still fresh in the minds of enough Patriots fans. Because when I'd heard it... I thought: Ugh, don't remind me of the Super Bowl and the Patriots. I mean their last Super Bowl win seems like more than just some years ago.

Re: The new 98.5 FM - The Sports Hub
Anyone been listening lately? It's the offseason so there really hasn't been much celtics news so they haven't been talking much about them. However, I have tuned in a few times over the last couple weeks and let me say - it is truely refreshing to hear new voices. WEEI had me fed up. D&C was terrible, big show is unlistenable sometimes. They just yell over each other constantly. They are little little children discussing sports.
98.5 sports hub is a lot more refreshing and there is some civilized sports talk on there. I'd really recommend it. Hopefully the Cs talk will pick up once the season starts, but for now its great. I'm as big of a red sox and patriots fan as celtics so, its no biggie
And to be fair, Dale and Holley still do a great show on WEEI, they are the only ones I can bare to listen to. and Ted wasn't too bad to listen to the rare times i tune in during the evenings when theirs not a sox game

Re: The new 98.5 FM - The Sports Hub
Since its debut, I haven't changed back to WEEI. It's nice to listen to voices in clear stereo.
But I've to say, my impression so far, is a mix bag. I enjoy the station's freshness, but I find some of the hosts annoying. I remember watching FSN some years ago and disliking Greg Dickerson compared to Gary Tanguay. Now, I find Tanguay irksome to listen to as well. He and Zolak... Ugh. Michael Felger is Michael Felger: You already know what you're getting into by listening to him. Tony Massarotti and the other personalities I'm not really familiar with.
The one thing I've noticed, the hosts seem too relaxed on their shows. Except maybe the evening show. I say that not as a good thing. I think I might like the evening host the best. Maybe. I don't listen to the station consistently.
I don't know... I like change in this sense. But I'd hoped to hear more Celtics talk. So I'm disappointed in that regard. I'll tune in to the station whenever I think to. But, needless to say, I don't go out of my way to do so. It's frustrating. It's like if you're a Celtics fan, you've seemingly only the internet as your primary source for information and fan interaction. Just seems unfair to me if you're a basketball fan first. I remember I'd said in the beginning that I was hoping that the new station would dedicate at least one day to discuss solely the Boston Celtics. Yeah, right. The same ass bleep, catering to the Red Sox and fans.

I agree with you about Tanquay. His voice is way too deep for the radio and he is a dork. Also, Zolak has no business being a radio host. He really has no knowledge of any sport other than football.
What exactly are they supposed to talk about regarding the Celtics right now? Give it time, it'll come.

Re: The new 98.5 FM - The Sports Hub
At least the choices on radio are improving for Boston sports fans.
http://www.boston.com/sports/other_spor ... _sign_off/
ESPN Radio’s Boston affiliate, WAMG-AM 890, will go off the air Monday after four years plagued by a weak signal and limited local programming.
But ESPN, the powerhouse sports network, may not lack an outlet in the Boston market for long. According to multiple industry sources, ESPN is in discussions to air some of its national programming on WEEI-AM 850 during nights and weekends, with WEEI intending to move to an FM station within months. (Entercom Communications, which owns WEEI, also owns two FM stations in Boston: WAAF 97.7/107.3, and Mike 93.7.)
ESPN Radio would then take over the 850 spot on the dial. The new ESPN 850 station would then be affiliated with the ESPN Boston website, which launches Monday.
This development adds to the recent frenzy in Boston sports radio competition, which became considerably more contentious in mid-August, when the CBS Radio-owned “98.5 The Sports Hub’’ launched on WBZ’s FM signal, issuing the first legitimate challenge to WEEI’s local dominance.
