Celtic 2010 FA

Post#1 » by snowman » Sat Dec 26, 2009 4:08 pm

Boston has 10 potential contracts ending at season's end. Pierce, Ray Allen, Hudsun, House, TA, Giddens, Walker, Daniels, Scal, and Williams.
How do want to see each handled?

Pierce will pick up his option.
Ray Allen will be resigned. (I would like to see 3 years, 24 mil)
I would like to see Daniels, Williams, and Hudson resigned for 2-3 years.
Daniels, who excepted 1,990,000 this season will more than likely demand 2.7 to 3 mill per for 3 years.
Williams, who signed for 825,000, should get 1.7 to 2 mil per for 3 years.
Hudson, who signed for 457,000 should get around 625,000 per for 2 years.

I would like to see a trade of some combo of House, TA, Scal, Walker, and Giddens to bring in a useful piece. We have seen what these players can do, except Walker and Giddens who have been here two years each and can't get on the floor. I could see picking up their option for one more season, but it would have to be a make or break time for them both.
Scal must have pics of Danny's wife or something, but I just don't see him getting resigned.
House has such hot and cold spells, and if he isn't on with his shot, he is a waste.
TA has really come on since coming back from his injury, so it's a tough call. We all know his good and bad points, but I think his good play lately should be taken advantage of and package him in a trade while his value is high.

What do you guys think?

There are only 2 sure things:
1) Pierce resigning
2) Scal finding another team next summer or being traded before the trade deadline for his expiring contract.

Giddens doesn't strike me as a keeper - he looks to be much less talented and yes, dumber than TA. He'll most likely be taking his new shamrock tat to another team. Possibly in a Scal package? Who knows.

The date to look forward to for some trade excitement is February 18 - The trade deadline. We should be seeing some interesting movement around the league.

Why are you sure Scal won't be back? Even if we trade him, isn't there a chance we sign him in the summer? It would be for the vet min, and at that money he is a deal.

You can't answer your question without knowing what the team will look like in June.

There is your starter, your backup, active 12, and
mistakes/injured players/new draft picks, which is often referred to
as either Deep Bench (Being nice) or Inactive List (more polite than F*n useless).

The Celtics would currently like to upgrade backup wing and backup PG,
with a wing who can spread the floor by making 3's (Mike Miller, Ryan Gomes)
and a point guard that can dribble and make shots (Nate Robinson, Allen Iverson).

The complicating factor is they will only have the MLE next year,
so to improve on Eddie House (not so easy), they have to hope for a free agent
like Allen Iverson to simply play for the veteran minimum.

This restriction to the MLE also complicates trades for a player like Nate Robinson,
who would lose his Bird rights in a trade, and therefore, next summer as an
Unrestricted Free Agent will probably try to go to a playoff team
who will use their MLE on him.

This loss of Bird rights (for Nate Robinson) may also prevent the Celtics from
trading Marquis Daniels or Tony Allen
for a player they won't have the dollars to re-sign unless they allocate their MLE to (Nate).

It's a little different going after a free agent like Mike Miller this summer,
who might be able to be signed for the full MLE, unless he gets more from
a desperate team with cap room.

But to trade away Scal + Eddie + Tony or Marquis
for a player who there will be no guarantee that he will
re-sign with the Celtics will probably stop that trade, although
trading for Mike Miller allows the Celtics to re-sign him without using the MLE.

So, considering all these factors, the one trade that may actually happen is if the Wolves
want to dump Ryan Gomes for a First Round Pick, we're hearing the 2011 pick, although
the 2010 pick only has a cap hold of like $830,000; then they'd want just Scal.

But bringing in Gomes would probably kill a Mike Miller deal, who is probably a better fit to
back up Pierce and Ray Allen, since Gomes is more of a PF/SF and Miller an SG/SF.

That said, it's clear Rasheed and Davis are next years locked up backups.

The Celtics will not be able to bring back Williams for anything more than the vet minimum for
a player of his seniority. That very well might not be enough.
Scal is probably done, even as the 5th Big, since he stinks at even that. But bringing in Gomes
would possibly reduce Glen Davis' minutes, which might not be a bad thing
since Gomes provides 3 point spacing.

Before everyone writes off Tony Allen, realize that Giddens is done from the minute his
option was not picked up; and Walker MAY BE done after this year.
If the Celtics trade for Ryan Gomes, Walker will never get off the bench,
although the Celtics might exercise Walker's option since they will likely have to give up
their 2010 or 2011 First Round Pick to get Gomes, in addition to sending Scal to Minnesota.

If Gomes is brought in, then the MLE can be used on a backup point guard,
like Nate Robinson or Allen Iverson. They wouldn't get the full MLE,
but Nate would probably get $4 million, and Iverson $3 to $3.5 million.

Hudson's value is purely as a workout partner for Rajon,
Hudson will likely never be anything more than that for the Celtics.

So, as far as who may not be back,
first figure on Giddens, Hudson, Walker and Scal opening up spots.

Figure the Celtics don't need to carry more than 13 players.

If they can get a PG for $4 million, that leaves $1.7 million possibly for Williams, more
if they get their PG for a first year salary less than $4 Million.

Which is why I think that the Celtics make the Gomes trade. Because if they don't,
and they use the MLE on Mike Miller, then they are relying on their #30 pick for backup PG.
And the chances of that working out are not good, although you can get lucky.

And even if the Celtics are able to bring in someone like Iverson or Nate Robinson,
I would not be surprised if they offered Eddie House a contract, to keep him around,
since he's usually dependable for one thing, plus he knows the offense and plays within it.
Probably just a one year deal, though; Eddie might be able to get a multi-year deal,
in which case he might be gone.

I think the Celtics consider keeping Tony and Marquis around, although both will have suitors
since their will be tons of teams with cap room this summer. Some sites wonder if Marquis'
has a second year on his contract or not. Makes a big difference.

It's very clear that Danny will be squeezed by cap constraints next summer,
regardless of being able to re-sign guys like Ray Allen and Tony Allen.

Sheldon Williams and Marquis Daniels both could be lost to higher bidders with
longer term deals. It's going to be a tightrope for Wyc and Danny and Doc to walk;
and why you might see a trade before the trade deadline for someone like Gomes;
it's one less player that they have to use an MLE on (unless they have already decided
that Mike Miller is their man, and they know Miller will play in Boston (possible,
since Doc coached him for nearly 3 years in Orlando).
