The O board according to Doc......

Post#1 » by Kefa461 » Sun Jan 24, 2010 8:07 pm

...it's not a big deal.........

Rivers on offensive rebounding: “I don’t worry about offensive glass much. As many offensive rebounds as you get, I’d rather get back on defense. I’m more concerned about the defensive glass. We’re shooting above 50 percent, so half your offensive rebounds are gone every time you shoot the ball.
“We’re holding teams to 41-42 percent, so they’re clearly going to have more offensive-rebound opportunities. If we can get defensive glass, then we can shoot 60 percent because we can run.’’

ps......Thumb’s up for practice
Marquis Daniels practiced briefly, his first action since undergoing left thumb surgery last month . . . Brian Scalabrine (shoulder) plans to return to practice Tuesday.

Agreed. I agree with Doc's statement on us not getting offensive rebounds, with how our offense is running we should be worried more about getting back on D, but we're giving up way too many. If defense is that important to Doc, he should be getting into the team about finishing on the defensive end and securing the rebound, rather than just saying it's okay that the other team shoots ~40% and therefore gets more chances. The percentage is nice, but if we don't cut down on how many offensive rebounds we give up then we're going to keep letting them get 20 more shots than us at 40%.

Of course, he's not going to say there's a problem to the media though.

Doc should check the tape from the last game again. No one was blocking out or even so much as jumping for the ball. They were just waiting for the ball the come down where ever it may. It was a frustratingly passive attitude. Had nothing to do with running back for D.

Doc is giving too much emphasis on defense and is completely ignoring the offense. Defense wins championships, but lousy offense makes it easier for the opponents' defense too does it not?

Doc is saying he isn't concerned with Boston crashing the offensive glass or comparing offensive rebounds to offensive rebounds, he is more concerned with keeping the other team off the offensive glass.

The coaching staff has put an emphasis on trying to get into transition more offensively and try capitalize more on Rondo's strengths but the problem is that guys have started to leak out and then we do a crappy job on the defensive glass.

In Doc's view we are sacrificing offensive rebounding for floor spacing and getting back on defense. Now they need to figure out how to continue to defensively rebound and get hoops in transition and they will be fine.

In essensce it is okay to be a bad offensive rebounding team statistically, which we are, but it isn't okay to be a middle of the road defesnive rebounding team, which we also are right now.

Jim OB used to preach pretty much the same thing - it's par for the course around the league. Offensive rebounding is no longer emphasized because it hurts a teams defense. OTOH he is right on the money we do need to improve our defensive rebounding..
