Thoughts about the Chicago Rumor.
I was at work wondering a few things. One if we did trade for Ty Thomas, could it be a sign and trade? He is a free agent and if I am correct he will loose his bird rights in any trade. Also those who worry about a Hinrich and Rondo backcourt, what about a Pierce and Rondo backcourt with Ty playin SF? And I read a quote somewhere stating that many think Ty is a scenery change away from becoming a poorman's Amare, if so I think it would be a great move. Just wondering if anyone can answer my questions or add to the post.

i don't think you lose your bird rights in a trade, only if you sign as a FA.
i like Ty but what could we give up to get him?

In layman's terms Bird rights are an option that makes it easy to re-sign a player whoes contract has expired. If you want to know more someone will post a great explination. I think you could also find a fantastic one at wikipedia.
With Ty Thomas, we don't have to care because he's on his rookie contract. So the Celtics will still have the advantage when he becomes a free agent to re-sign him.

with a player's bird rights you can go over the cap to re-sign them. i think it's three consecutive years with the same team. so if you trade for a player who's been on the team for three years you get their bird rights.

This is how I remember it, but I remember seeing it written somewhere that Nate Robinson would have to approve where he's traded to because his new team wouldn't have his bird rights. I know he was re-signed last offseason to a one year deal, but he's been with the Knicks for five years now and I don't recall them ever renouncing his contract or anything. Does anyone know why this would be different (if I'm remembering this correctly)?
