Ya know -- if Ainge trades for a guy like Bertrans and pays him on his next deal, then a year later he really will have the salary ballast to trade for whoever the Capela/Turner/Thompson equivalents are at that point.

I disagree.
A center that has size and can defends, rebound and hit 3s and bench scoring and this team can be a legit threat.
To what?

Agreed— an extra round in the playoffs absolutely would help the Jays and Smart develop though. If the opportunity cost is a guy we’ll end up cutting in two years, we should take it to further grow our guys.

Re: Trade Thread Part Deux
So last year the thinking was to not make any trades as to not disrupt a potential AD trade at the end of the season.
Obviously we are not handicapped by that this year... but I’m wondering if this whole Kumbaya, strong character guy, team chemistry thing ultimately has any sway over any potential deals Danny might make (or not make).
Like did last year make us gun shy and will the fear of upsetting chemistry be a major factor going forward. Or will Danny be willing to trade anyone for anyone chemistry be damned?

Does that make you a tax team this year?

Not a bad idea but you'd have to pay Favors in FA I believe. And Redick is a defensive liability.
Maybe for Covington/Dieng? Although I think Covington is too inconsistent.

Favors would be so perfect here. Redick too, obviously.

Re: Trade Thread Part Deux
Take it FWIW but this dude who's an insider on the Hawks board claims that the bigger trades are gonna come, but that the league is waiting for the first main trade domino to fall: Robert Covington.
Also says, and I'm serious, Hawks are trying hard to get Bertans+Adams.

Dieng would be a perfect center imo. Turner the second choice
And covington's inconsistencies would be minimalized by either starting with our big three or coming off bench.
And of course there is always the option to flip his contract for 2 smaller ones, a bench scorer and a starting pf.

Re: Trade Thread Part Deux
I dream of having a lineup that can switch 1-5 in the future. Its why I love our 1-3 in the future being Smart-Brown-Tatum.
I’ve been trying to think of ways to get a 4 thats switchable and young enough to be a long-term piece. Would love to try to work out a Hayward for Aaron Gordon swap, with the goal of making him a 4 in the mold of a poor mans Draymond. I get that he’s not really good right now, but he fits perfectly in my fully switchable dream so **** it.

I've said it before, i really love Kemba, but i was excited to go into the season with Smart/Jaylen/Tatum at the 1/2/3. I also agree about Gordon, if he didn't have to be a top 3 option offensively i think he would go all out on D.

I was hoping that Brown would ball out and become a great trade chip, not sure how far a team with a maxed out Kemba/Brown/Tatum can actually go. Doesn't seem that far to me

This year, there may be no trades to make. Jaylen poison pill, Hayward a potential UFA. Hard to see any move that improves us much.

I just don't see a good deal unless were using rookies, lesser bench guys and assets to make the deal. We have 3 picks. We dont need 3 picks again.

We likely have FOUR incoming picks (3 1sts, 1 2nd). Do you mean to tell me we don't want to get even younger?? If Kanter and Hayward both opt out, let's replace them, Green, and Wanamaker with 19-yos.

As healthy as he is right now? Yes, no question he opts out. I'd love to resign him to like 3 years, $90m.
That would be a terrible use of capspace.
Team would have 4 players at or near 30 million with no chance of winning a championship.
Would be a completely terrible move. Terrible.
It's not really a use of cap space. We have no Cap space, unless we want to renounce Tatum or something.
If we can resign Hayward on a fair deal we have to do it.
That not having cap space really is the issue. We won't have money to improve via free agency, so we have to have contracts to improve via trades (even if that means throwing in firsts to do so). In my opinion, it's not that we have to resign Hayward, it's that we have to either resign him to a fair deal, or trade him at this trade deadline so we'll have the necessary contracts to do trades down the line. In no way would I give him 30M again, though, for what he is now, since it seems like his ankle will always be an issue (according to him). Highest I'd go is 3/66 or so, and if it didn't work out, at least that's tradeable. So yeah, either trade him or resign him. Letting him walk with no return would not be good.

3/66 is unreasonable.

Re: Trade Thread Part Deux
Wait for the summer see who shakes loose and see if jaylen keeps building his value up - if he plays so great that we don’t want to trade him that’s a win for the Celtics. If we can use him to get a perennial all star all nba player- that’s a win for the Celtics.
same for Tatum but Tatum is only available IMO for the absolute big fish. Brown I deal for all stars Tatum I reserve for bonafide superstars. Patience is the key right now with our salary construction with this roster. Small moves for depth but nothing major.
All the Hayward deals - we only hope improve us. I see nothing close to definitive just trades to make trades. This season is a gap season and we weren’t ever as good as 24-8 suggested nor are we a team that can win it all and that’s ok right now. no trade for Drummond or some other move to make a move is getting us past Milwaukee clippers or the lakers. If u think otherwise you’re delusional and you don’t go all in on trades when the trades only raises your ceiling to “still not good enough”
I don’t think getting a big is life or death either although it would be nice. We are gonna win a round in the playoffs guaranteed and depending on seeding we will take it from there. Patience is key.
