This is the trade, without including the Kings leg, I've been suggesting so I'm a fan. Okogie's 25-26 is non-guaranteed, so unless they need to guarantee it for next year even if executed in this league year, it saves them 19mm. Green could take some of the burden off White to defend PGs.

FarBeyondDriven wrote:hey guys, can you please let know what the deal was with Jrue Holidays extension? I'm hearing rumors of a potential Holiday for DeRozan trade. I was wondering why you extended him. Didn't he say a few years ago he was already contemplating retirement and wanted to retire after this season? Seems like an odd choice to extend him given that and the fact that the apron and cap ramifications were known at the time. This contract along is responsible for most your of cap problems. Is it just a case of feeling you had to do it to try and repeat? I'm just worried if we get saddled with it he might not be motivated as the saying goes, once you consider retiring you have one foot out the door. Thanks

Jrue declined his $37.4-million player option as part of the extension (and made $30.1 million in his first year), so that was massive for the luxury tax...

And Brad loves Jrue, so he sees him here long term or he is sure it will be no problem trading him even with this extension...

Yeah there was some immediate savings by him declining his option and extending. I think the Celtics saw it as extending the window a couple years and then dealing with the consequences later.
I think the need to reduce salary is over blown and remember this happened before the ownership change. The Celtics if they do nothing will have a huge tax bill 2025/26 and a pretty small bill in 2026/27.
There is a lot of hyperbole out there as well about how bad that contract is Jrue will be between 50-70th highest paid player in the league for the next 3 years. Even if he declines a bit he probably remains a top 100 player. He was a top 50 guy in 2023/24, too 70ish last year. I think he is a solid contributor for the next 3 years. He is a bit overpaid perhaps but it’s not a crazy bad contract.

i have been posting and pondering similar trades.

I think you can just do this from Charlotte's perspective.

Brooklyn in: Kristaps, Lakers pick
Out: Claxton

Kings in: Jrue
Out: Demar, Cash (~200K)

Lakers in Claxton
Out: Vanderbilt, Klebr and a pick

Charlotte in: Demar Derozan
Out: Okogie, Mark Williams and Cash (~3.2 mill)

Boston in: Mark WIlliams, Josh Okogie, Maxi Klebr, Jared Vanderbilt and 26.5 million in saving (cash from Sacramento 200K, Cash from Charlotte 3.2 mill)
Out: Jrue and Kristaps

White/Pritchard
Brown/Okogie
Hauser/Sheierman/Walsh
Vanderbilt/Klebr/Tillman
Williams/Kornet/Queta

Dump Tillman if Horford wants to come back for a cheap, young combo guard.

Turns out we didn't win that Malcolm Brogdon trade after all.
The most charitable interpretation is that it's ethnic cleansing and massive war crimes.

I mean that trade lead to the Holiday trade that lead to a championship so we really can’t complain

Idk. Got a championship.
It’s probably the same as it was when it happened. A win win. For both.
Jrue extension was a separate decision and you can now argue in hindsight that was a poor decision.

If the Celtics didn’t give Jrue Holiday an extension after the trade then it would have been pretty likely they would have given him the extension right after they won the championship so it’s really a moot point.

It’s just a year later it doesn’t look so good

The extension was agreed to after the 2023/24 season when he first became eligible. It was a completely separate decision from the trade.
He played his first season with the Celtics under his old contract. There was a player option for 24/25.

I bet they get wiggle room under it by doing an extension with kyrie at a lower number than his player option number

Send Jrue to Dallas for PJ and Mavs pay BKN to eat their players. Hauser into their TPE.
KP to Orlando for WCJ and they do the same with KCP
Cs duck the tax, even get picks.

He’s not perfect for sure, but his whole offseason series is fun and his draft stuff too.

Mainly just an example of a guy that values the Cs players in trades and doesn’t just pay to dump them.

Nico Harrison said Defense Wins Championships. I believe him. He's the greatest GM to ever live. No better guy to get than Jrue. Go Nico!

I would do it. And it sounds somewhat reasonable as well. Especially getting a proven yet young wing in Green and 3 players to draft at 28-32-34
2 things need to go.. my lack of spell check and Joe..

Dallas is a great Jrue destination because of Jrue is a good guy, Jrue is a 2x champ and jrue is basically the literal ideal vet for Cooper Flagg to learn from.

Interesting option.

I am not sure I love WCjr, but I dont hate him.

I don't know how Brad will do it, but my wish is Jrue and KP out and Cam Johnson and Gafford coming to Boston.

Yeah, that’s his premise. KP is a big upgrade for Orlando when healthy, WCJ younger, more of a 4/5, but also lots of injuries. So, Orlando also sends a pick.

I actually really like WCJ and have tried to fake trade for him before. He’s not healthy KP, but switchable, had a decent 3 ball before this year. But, ORL spacing or whatever this year ruined both him and KCP, so probably expect a bounce back year in the Cs. Cheap next year, but extension starts in 26-27 that’s still pretty cheap. 3 years/$58.6M.

I’m going to do the math next week, but if you get PJ and WCJ I think you could still have room for 28, 32 and a few vet mins for Al and Luke. Not positive, tho. If so, that’s a pretty solid team for a reset / duck the tax / stay competitive and roll when JT gets back -either end of next season or 26-27.

To stay under the tax the 2nd year in 26-27, PJ walks, or you move WCJ in his new deal. Or you keep them both, pay some tax, and go win a few more titles.

Return to Boston Celtics
