Does anyone think our starting center for 26-27 is on the roster now?
Genuinely curious.
Genuinely curious.
The most charitable interpretation is that it's ethnic cleansing and massive war crimes.

I'm secretly hoping Brad is playing some 4d chess here. Despite the media reports, maybe his first choice would be to extend Simons but only if it was real cheap.
If Simmons does a 3 year $60 deal the it is a yes. But I doubt he will go that cheap. I would say this slot# is $20M right now, and then no center unless other moves.
Right now with no other moves, and we let Simons and Niang walk, the roster stands at $205M for 2026-27 with a projected second apron of $222m.
That is $17M. They would have to get rid of one Hauser, or White to acquire this big.
Could they go over second apron after one year under it? Sure, i guess. But it better be worth it.

With Tatum, Brown, White, Hauser, Pritchard, Gonzalez, Scheierman, Queta, Walsh, Garza and Minot under contract in 26-27 the Celtics have 180.6 million committed to 11 guys, not 205 million.
I think you forgot to remove either Holiday or Simons salary.
Correct. My look at holiday and zinger there.
So, that is $38M for a center.

Center free agent market is pretty bleak next year

Technically, since the KP trade hasn't been finalized and he'll be back for MLE.

If that somehow doesn't happen, I think we are trading for a big next summer. Either with picks/TPE or via matching salary that extends beyond 25-26 (cough, Kuz, cough). Queta will be in the mix for sure, but they either add a backup behind him or a 4/5 type.

As a proponent of a Simons for Vucevic trade, I would like to end the year with Queta and Garza taking the center minutes if Tatum does not make a return.
This is kinda why I don't want Vuc or Nurk. Let's just roll with the guys we got. We're weak at PF too. So, as long as a salary saving trade brings back someone 6'9" or taller, I'm happy.

And we will be able to stack contracts under 2nd apron so it's not just a matter of Kuza matching perfectly. Could be Kuz plus White plus Payton plus picks for the Joker or something, who knows, lol (shooting high)

Yup. KP might be the best one and after him it gets ugly. I'm assuming Hartenstein and Thunder find a way to keep him on the team.

Honestly, I started the off-season thinking the same. But, I really wouldn't hate the idea as much anymore. He was decent on the Lakers, sucked on the Wiz like everyone who played on the Wiz ever, then was in a bad situation in MIL. He very well may suck here, but he'll suck at $5M less than Simons.
But, there's a small chance he's useful enough that even when Tatum is back we keep him off the bench. It's probably similar to the chance that Simons magically learns to play D. Slightly less, I guess, but not hugely so.

To be clear on the above, I don't hold out much hope for either Simons or Kuz long term. So, why not take the cheaper one ($5M less), get a 2nd or two, and free up more time at the guard/wing spot where we DO have long term prospects that we invested 1st round picks in.
If you think Simons is a possible, long term answer, I get that. Then you wouldn't trade for Kuz at that point.

Remember lakers fans telling us Kuzma, Ingram and Ball were all better than Tatum?

If this is the logic (a fair one i think), they should flip simons for someone like vucevic and see how much money he’d give up in a buyout to see how much salary you can cut for this year. Another option is folding the KP and Jrue trade into one and rerouting Simons to BKN while taking back Mann (considered a bad contract because more years left on the deal but less $ than simons for this year). This would also create a TPE equal to Jrue’s salary (32.7m)

Looked into this more because i think it’s a bit weird that celtics signed two more guys at their vet mins (which is more expensive than signing UDFAs) which added to the tax $ putting them over by 20.3mil while no additional salary cutting moves have been announced. If the celtics execute the jrue/kp trade in one while flipping simons to the nets and taking back mann (bkn still has 17m cap space left so this is possible) and then trade niang into the nets room exception (8.7m), they will be under the tax by less than 0.1mil LOL. My theory based on this is that they already have this deal lined up as a backup but are looking into deals that they might like more until the trades have to go official.

Personally I want to see what Simons can do in Boston. I’m looking forward to having a guy who can get into the teeth of the defense and do both score and pass. The game is so much easier when you have a guard who can win with their first step. And since Stevens and Mazulla want to shoot a trillion threes we need guys who can make them.
