Think about Thon Maker like this:

Would you rather pay Amir Johnson 12 million next year, or draft a 3" taller version of him with much better athleticism?

Draft Express might not value that kind of super-role player, but Ainge, Stevens, and Celtics fans do.

A lot of times 7 footers get knocked for not being 265+ lb bangers and true centers. What's wrong with being a PF/C?
Same thing with Poeltl, he has all the athleticism needed to be a good/great NBA PF, with plenty of potential at center as well. But because he's 7'1, nobody is looking at his PF ability.

We saw this with Porzingis last year. Everybody said he was years away from contributing because they only looked at him as a center. Booed on draft night, then when the Knicks announced that he would be the starting PF, Knicks fans acted like they never even thought of that. Because the hadn't.

How can you call Bender soft and simultaneously praise Poeltl and Maker as top 5 picks?

Because they don't shy away from contact. They embrace it. You either have it or you don't. Ask Yi Jianlian.

This was more of a critique on Poeltl than Maker-- Poeltl is softer than baby $h!t. I watched him play multiple games and I would 100% describe him as soft. He plays like Tyler Zeller.

He was playing with a bad ankle in that Gonzaga game, where he was double teamed every time he touched the ball. And again, think of him as a PF/C, not just a center. He has awesome athleticism for a 7'1 guy, similar or perhaps even better than Porzingis.

Both Porzingis and Towns, and Myles Turner for that matter, would have had very different rookie seasons if they had been played strictly at center. Now everybody praises how awesome they were, but it's because they were able to play most of their minutes at PF. Think of Poeltl and Maker in the same way and you'll realize that their inability to shut down Drummond from day 1 isn't a deal breaker.

Celtics have a crapload of picks, and we already have a crapload of guards, good/great guards.

Nothing wrong with drafting a PF/C with the Nets pick and then drafting a beefcake center later on.

There are no starting caliber beefcake centers in this draft. But there are starting caliber PF/Cs like Poeltl and Maker, and there are stud backup beefcake centers later on in the draft. We could even draft two of em later on.

Sample Draft:

Nets pick: Poeltl or Maker
Dallas pick: Denzel Valentine
Celtics pick: best beefcake backup center available: AJ Hammons, Stone, or Ivica Zubac (19.0 years old | 7'1" | 265 lbs)
Pick 31: Best scoring pg available (good point guards always drop, because there's more of them. Think JClarkson)

Other picks: best prospect available

Celtics brass doesn't even distinguish between PF/C. they are all just bigs.
beefcake centers aren't really our style anyways, i think brad prefers bigs who can run the floor and help with spacing.

Let's stop talking about taking Maker with the Nets pick until he's not projected to go in the late first/early second

When does the league handle the tiebreakers?

Unknown. Reporters just announce it. Though, they usually do it pretty soon after the season ends.

Should do it today, I don't see the sense in waiting around. Give teams more of a heads up. Wish the lotto was earlier too, but they're probably looking to milk that for TV ratings.

I still think we need one or two at the end of the bench, Perk style, especially if Sullinger isn't re-signed. We got lucky Sully has been healthy all year.

Now that it's all over but the coin flips, thanks to those (especially klemen4!!!) who kept us well-informed via this thread on the endless draft positioning possibilities throughout this crazy but intriguing season.

Beat me to it, we are involved in the Mavs pick and the 4 way tiebreaker with mia, atl, cha.

16, 21 would be perfect for us.

It's a huge crock of **** we're even flipping with mia, atl, cha. Should be Hornets, Celtics, Hawks, Heat just like the seeding order.

LOL. Thon Maker was too scared to play in Biosteel All-Canadian Classic last week (like the McDonald's All-American game, but Canadians) because it might have hurt his draft stock.

By the way, he was also a year older than most of those kids playing in that game. Let that sink in for a second - a guy who's 6 inches taller and a year older, afraid to play against other kids.

Thon Maker is Ivan Chireav.

No point in getting injured. Nobody else in that game was headed to the NBA in two months. Nobody else had to worry about losing millions of dollars to play in an exhibition game.

Last season it was held on April 17, day before playoffs began. So maybe they draw lots tomorrow.

He also skipped the latest Nike Hoops summit. I also guarantee that he won't play in the NBA pre-draft combine too. He's a 2nd rounder, late 1st rounder if you're foolish enough to think he might actually be decent. Hilarious that you're thinking of taking him with a top 5 pick.

I for one would like to take a minute to tip the cap to Brooklyn for sucking so terribly all year long despite the surprisingly resurgent health of Brook Lopez. Thank you Brooklyn for putting up the 3rd worst record in a league where teams with INCENTIVE to suck are actively tanking to be worse than you. It took guts, grit and a lot of incoherent decisions, but you found a way to dig deep and deliver terrible basketball night after night.

We appreciate you! :usa:

Nobody else entering the draft is playing in the Hoops Summit. Would they? He's already said he's definitely going to the Combine if the NBA deems him eligible for the draft.

What's hilarious is sleeping on the smart, hard working athletic 7'1 guy with a standing reach taller than Shaq's.

Are you his brother/agent? What qualifies you to say he's smart or hard working?

Against serious competition, he gets smoked. Look at his stats from the 2015 world championships a year ago-- 2 point, 10 rebounds, 1 block. We're not taking him with a top 5 pick -- no one is. He'll be lucky to go late lottery.

If you want to talk about him on the Celtics, think Dallas pick. The Brooklyn pick is just nonsense.

Return to Boston Celtics
